🚧 CIS returns: 3 things to check before you hit submit!

HMRC has identified three common errors in monthly Construction Industry Scheme (CIS) returns and as a result some businesses will start receiving letters from HMRC this month where errors have been identified.

So, if you’re a contractor, here are 3 things worth checking......

1️⃣ Are you using the correct CIS deduction rate?

When you verify a subcontractor, HMRC will confirm the deduction rate to use.

Remember, rates can change — so don’t automatically use the rate from the last return. Always check you’re using the latest rate notified by HMRC.

2️⃣ Have you recorded materials separately?

CIS deductions generally apply to labour, not materials.

If materials are included on a subcontractor’s invoice, make sure the material costs are recorded separately. This also helps make sure your CIS return matches your accounting records.

3️⃣ Do your figures actually match?

Before submitting your return, check your payment, material and deduction figures against your invoices, payroll and accounting records.

A few minutes checking the figures now could save you a much bigger headache later!

🆘 Have you received a letter from HMRC?

Don’t panic, but don’t ignore it either!!

HMRC is continuing to check CIS returns and may ask businesses to review their records and explain how their return was completed.

And, as always, be careful with unexpected emails or messages claiming to be from HMRC. You can check whether HMRC contact is genuine here:

🧐 Not sure if your CIS returns are correct?

That’s where we can help.

Get in touch and we can have a chat how we can help so its one less thing you need to worry about in the future!

Appleleaf team building day out 😀

On Friday, the Appleleaf Chartered Certified Accountants team stepped away from the office for a fabulous team building day at Elsham Activity Centre where we were well looked after and entertained by the lovely Charlotte Rycroft

First we took on a Traitors style challenge 🕵️‍♀️, where we soon discovered, and outed, both traitors and got our heads round some challenges we had to complete together.

We worked really well as a team, the mathematical task was probably our quickest which was reassuring for Charlotte!

Then it was time for a break for lunch and after refuelling we split into two teams for laser shooting. This is where the competitive members of the team were discovered, along with some great and not-so-great strategies and tactics.....

Although this also saw a track record set for rescuing a "casualty on a stretcher" in a record 42 seconds using one team's agreed strategy of both Beth and Kat just "legging it" and shocking the opposition, while the rest of the team covered - and that certainly worked 🤣

We then finished off with a round of Foot-Golf which was actually much harder than it looked but we all got there eventually.

The day was so much fun, I don't think I have laughed that much in while and it was great for everyone to get to know each other a bit better and just have some good old-fashioned fun and laugh until they snort a little (that's me 🤣)

We then finished the day off going for a team curry - which we were all well ready for after all that fresh air and running around!

Thank you so much to Charlotte Rycroft and the team at Elsham, they were so welcoming and all the activities felt safe and well organised and we all decided that this needs to be an annual team event for us all.

💷 It’s National Payroll Week! 💷

This week, we’re celebrating all things payroll and, the people behind it all!

Payroll is one of those things that generally will be just going on quietly in the background, but it plays a very important role in every business.

Your employees won't realise everything that goes on behind the scenes, making sure everyone gets paid correctly and on time and keeping up with ever-changing legislation and deadlines. There's a lot more to payroll than simply pressing “pay”!

A big shoutout to all the payroll professionals out there who keep everything running smoothly.

We want to give a special thank you to Elle Howden who is our current payroll manager, her hard work and attention to detail helps make life easier for our clients every single day.

Elle is sadly moving on to a new opportunity so at the moment we have not one but two fabulous payroll people at the moment as Kate Leo has joined the team as our new Payroll Manager.

Happy National Payroll Week! 🎉

Sole Trader or Limited Company?

Are you thinking of starting a business? Or are you thinking have you set up your business in the best way? Matthew Portess runs through the main pros and cons of the two options.

In our final Making Tax Digital video Matthew talks a little bit about the software we use and champion as a firm to support clients with their MTD submissions and that we find works really well for us.

This is Xero and FreeAgent both of which our staff are accredited to use and train clients to use if they want to manage their own submissions and bookkeeping.

If you would like any more information on how we can help support you to transition to and manage MTD without the stress please get in touch!

Budget 2026 date announced

The Chancellor of the Exchequer, John Healey, has announced that Budget 2026 will be presented on 28 October 2026.

The Chancellor has said that the Budget will "move money and power out of Westminster, and into every postcode around Britain."

He also added that the Budget would "provide businesses and families with the stability they need to plan for the future."

Alongside the Budget, the Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR) will publish its latest economic and fiscal forecast, reflecting its assessment of the government’s plans.

We have been asked by clients what impact will Making Tax Digital (MTD) have on the "traditional" self assessment tax return, Matthew Portess explains a bit more.....

Yesterday was national Playday - which is a celebration of the importance of play in a child's life, although it was somewhat overshadowed (excuse the intentional pun 😉) by the eclipse ☀️🌙

However, we thought it was still worth a reminder re HMRC's Tax-Free Childcare scheme, which can help eligible families with the cost of nurseries, childminders, holiday clubs, breakfast clubs and after-school clubs and families can save up to £2,000 per child.

Which can help fund the endless snacks apparently required during the holidays........

Through the scheme, the government adds £2 for every £8 paid into a Tax-Free Childcare account, providing support of up to £2,000 per year per child.

The maximum increases to £4,000 per year for a disabled child.

Families can receive up to £500 worth of top-up money (£1,000 for a disabled child) every three months.

Tax-Free Childcare can be used potentially be used alongside government funded childcare hours.

As always this is subject to meeting relevant eligibility criteria, all the details can be found here: https://www.gov.uk/tax-free-childcare
