There’s nothing quite like a recommendation from a trusted friend — and that’s exactly how this client came to Manor 5 Financial.

We sat down together and built a proper financial plan from the ground up: life cover for my client and his wife, personal protection, and making sure his pension is actually working hard for him.

That last line says it all. A pension that’s just sitting there isn’t doing its job.

My job is to change that.

I asked a prospective client last week if they knew how much their pension was worth.

They had a rough idea. A number they vaguely remembered from a statement they'd received a while back. But when I asked whether they knew how much they could afford to withdraw from it each year without it running out?

“No idea.”

That's actually completely normal. A pension pot figure on a statement doesn't tell you very much on its own.

The real question is how long that money needs to last and how much you can safely take from it each year to fund the life you want.

Get that balance wrong in one direction and you run out of money. Get it wrong in the other and you spend your retirement living more cautiously than you needed to.

A financial plan takes your pension, your other assets and your expected retirement spending and allows us to work out a withdrawal strategy that gives you confidence your money will last as long as you need it to.

"Never makes me feel a financial twit." That one made me smile! It is so important to talk on a level that the person you're talking to will understand.

Financial planning can feel overwhelming, and jargon does nobody any favours. Every client is different and every conversation should be tailored to what actually makes sense to them. Plain English, every time.

Also, this client kindly refers to me as independent, which I take to mean taking the leap to set up Manor 5 Financial from being an adviser in another firm! As an SJP Appointed Representative I work within their framework, but the personal service and commitment to every client is entirely my own.

Something I hear more than you might think... 😔

"My job pays the bills but I don’t enjoy it like I used to. I don't feel like I can afford to stop yet."

It usually comes from someone in their mid to late 50s. They've worked hard, built a career, given a lot to their employer. But somewhere along the way the passion faded and now they feel trapped between wanting out and not knowing if they can afford to leave.

That feeling is more common than people realise, and it's one of the most powerful reasons to have a financial plan in place.

Because without one, the answer to "can I afford to retire?" will always be "I'm not sure." And "I'm not sure" tends to keep people stuck.

With one? You get an actual answer. Sometimes it's sooner than expected. Sometimes it takes a bit of work. But either way you know. And knowing changes everything.

This client admitted they were a bit intimidated by the idea of working with a financial advisor. It's something I hear often.

The important thing to remember, the first conversation is always just a conversation. No jargon, no sales pitch or persuasion, just an honest chat about where you are now and where you want to get to. Taking the mystery out of it is half the job!

This client sat on something for a long time before reaching out, worrying that their pension "wasn't enough for a financial adviser's time."

I hear this more often than you'd think, and it genuinely couldn't be further from the truth. Some of the most valuable planning conversations I have are with people who nearly didn't pick up the phone!

Two things to consider if you think similar to this client;
1. The value of a pot does not dictate it's level of importance.
2. The value of receiving financial advice or guidance can be just as high for those with little or even nothing.

So remember; no pot is too small to start planning with, and as this client found, it's usually easier than expected.

This one started with a job move. One of those life moments that quietly raises the question "hang on, what's happening with my old pensions?"

A proper look through each of them turned up something this client didn't know was there, and just as importantly, gave their whole family peace of mind about the future.

Pensions are generally hard to understand, and it's rarely just about the numbers, it's about knowing where you stand!
