🚨 Missed the first MTD deadline? Don’t panic!

The first Making Tax Digital for Income Tax quarterly update was due on 7 August.

If you missed it, there’s some good news:

No penalty points will be issued for late quarterly updates during 2026/27.

But that doesn’t mean you can ignore it!

You still need to:
📌 Get your digital records up to date
📌 Submit your outstanding quarterly update
📌 Make sure you’re ready for the next deadline — 7 November 2026

And remember, quarterly updates do not replace your annual tax return.

Think of 2026/27 as your opportunity to get into the habit before penalty points for missed quarterly deadlines start from the following tax year.

Missed it? Get it sorted and move on — there’s no need to panic. 👍

Need help getting your MTD records or first quarterly update sorted? Bookkeeping4U can help.

🚨 Making Tax Digital: Your First Quarterly Update is Due by 7 August 2026

The countdown is on!

If you’re a sole trader or landlord with qualifying income over £50,000, and you joined Making Tax Digital (MTD) for Income Tax from April 2026, your first quarterly update must be submitted to HMRC by 7 August 2026.

Now is a great time to make sure you’re ready:

✅ You’re signed up for MTD for Income Tax
✅ You’re using HMRC-compatible software (we recommend Xero)
✅ Your records are up to date and your quarterly update is ready to submit before the deadline

Remember, these quarterly updates don’t replace your annual tax return. You’ll still need to complete your final declaration by 31 January following the end of the tax year.

Making Tax Digital is one of the biggest changes to the UK tax system in years. While the new process may seem daunting at first, keeping your records up to date throughout the year will make reporting far easier and help you avoid unnecessary stress as deadlines approach.

Need help getting started or submitting your first update? I’m here to help.

It is just three weeks until the deadline for the first HMRC MTD for Income Tax submissions. There's sill a lot of confusion arount MTD for Income Tax, so let's separate the fact from the fiction.

7 Myths About HMRC's New Making Tax Digital (MTD) for Income Tax

❌ Myth 1: It's just for big businesses
✅ Fact: MTD will apply to many sole traders and landlords, not just limited companies.
❌ Myth 2: You'll have to submit four tax returns every year
✅ Fact: You'll submit quarterly updates throughout the year, then complete one final declaration after your year-end.
❌ Myth 3: A spreadsheet is all you need
✅ Fact: You'll need MTD-compatible software (such as Xero) to keep digital records and submit information to HMRC.
❌ Myth 4: It starts for everyone at the same time
✅ Fact: MTD is being introduced in stages, depending on your qualifying income.
❌ Myth 5: MTD means you'll pay tax four times a year
✅ Fact: Quarterly updates are for reporting, not paying tax. Your tax payment dates remain unchanged (unless HMRC announces future changes).
❌ Myth 6: It's just extra paperwork
✅ Fact: Good software can automate much of the process, giving you better visibility of your finances and reducing errors.
❌ Myth 7: I can leave it until the last minute
✅ Fact: The businesses that prepare early will find the transition much smoother. Setting up your software and getting used to digital record-keeping now can save a lot of stress later.

Basically, the sooner you prepare, the easier MTD will be.

If you're unsure how MTD for Income Tax will affect you, I'd be happy to help you understand what's changing and get you ready before it becomes mandatory.
