That first time you pay yourself properly from the business… it hits differently. πŸ’·πŸ™Œ

It's a brilliant milestone. You've built something that isn't just generating money, it's actually paying you. But there's an important financial lesson here too.

If you run a limited company, taking money from the business isn't as simple as transferring whatever you need into your personal account.

Money you take could be:

πŸ’Ό Salary β€” normally processed through payroll.
πŸ“ˆ Dividends β€” distributions to shareholders that can only be paid from available profits and must be properly documented.
πŸ’· Repayment of money you've lent the company β€” if you've previously put your own money into the business.
πŸ“‹ A director's loan β€” money taken that doesn't fall into the categories above, which can have tax consequences depending on the circumstances.

The transfer might look exactly the same in your banking app, but the accounting and tax treatment can be very different.

So absolutely celebrate that first proper payday. πŸŽ‰

Just make sure you're paying yourself in the right way too.

Not sure what's appropriate for you and your company? That's exactly the sort of thing we're here to help with.

As a company director, understanding your business expenses can make a real difference to your financial management. Knowing what your business is spending money on helps you:

πŸ“Š Monitor where your money is going.
πŸ’· Build more accurate budgets.
πŸ“ˆ Identify areas where costs may be increasing.
πŸš€ Make better decisions as your business grows.

Common business expenses can include:

β€’ Travel for business purposes
β€’ Advertising and marketing
β€’ Office costs
β€’ Professional fees
β€’ Insurance
β€’ Training and development

Every business is different, and not every expense is automatically allowable for tax purposes. Keeping accurate records throughout the year makes preparing your accounts much easier and helps ensure you have the information you need when it matters most.

If you're ever unsure whether something should be recorded as a business expense, it's always worth asking before making assumptions.

Keeping up with tax regulations can feel like a full-time job. Rules change, deadlines come around quickly, and it's not always obvious what applies to your business.

Here are 3 signs it might be time to get some support:

βœ”οΈ You're spending hours trying to understand HMRC guidance. Your time is valuable. It should be spent running your business, not deciphering tax legislation.

βœ”οΈ You're constantly worried you've missed something. Whether it's a deadline, a return or a change in the rules, uncertainty can create unnecessary stress.

βœ”οΈ You only think about your accounts when a deadline is approaching. Good financial management happens all year round, not just at tax return time.

The right accountant doesn't just help you stay compliant, they give you confidence that everything is under control.

When was the last time you looked at your Balance Sheet?

If the answer is "only when my accountant sends it," you're not alone. But your Balance Sheet is one of the most useful financial reports your business has.

It gives you a snapshot of your business at a specific point in time, showing:

πŸ’· What your business owns (assets)
🧾 What your business owes (liabilities)
πŸ“Š The value that's been built up over time (equity)

Think of it as a financial health check.

A healthy Balance Sheet can help you:
βœ”οΈ Understand your business's financial position
βœ”οΈ Support funding or loan applications
βœ”οΈ Plan for future growth
βœ”οΈ Make more informed business decisions

Your Profit & Loss tells you how you've performed over a period of time.

Your Balance Sheet tells you where your business stands today.

Understanding both is key to running a successful business.

Have you ever looked at your sales figures and wondered...

"If I've invoiced all this work, why isn't there much money in the bank?"

The answer often comes down to Accounts Receivable.

Accounts receivable is simply the money your customers owe you for work you've already completed or goods you've already supplied.

On paper, you've made the sale.

But until you're paid, that money can't help you pay wages, suppliers, rent or your tax bill.

That's why keeping an eye on outstanding invoices is just as important as winning new business.

A few simple habits can make a big difference:

βœ”οΈ Send invoices as soon as work is completed.
βœ”οΈ Set clear payment terms from the start.
βœ”οΈ Follow up overdue invoices promptly.
βœ”οΈ Regularly review who owes you money.

A profitable business can still experience cash flow problems if customers aren't paying on time.

Remember: An invoice isn't cash until it's been paid.

Your break-even point is one of the most important numbers in your business.

Yet many business owners don't actually know what it is.

Your break-even point is the amount of revenue you need to generate before you start making a profit. In other words, it's the point where your income covers all of your business costs.

Why does this matter?

βœ”οΈ It helps you set realistic sales targets.

βœ”οΈ It shows how many jobs, products or clients you need each month to cover your costs.

βœ”οΈ It helps you make informed pricing decisions.

βœ”οΈ It gives you confidence when planning for quieter periods or future growth.

Without knowing your break-even point, it's easy to mistake being busy for being profitable.

Take some time to work out yoursβ€”or if you're not sure where to start, we're here to help.

Understanding your numbers isn't just good accounting; it's good business.
