The end of the world is nigh........

Well.....not actually the end of the world (unless AI decides we're all surplus to its requirements over the Easter weekend), but the end of the tax year.

So a lot of you will have been receiving Letters of Wit and Charm from HMRC about Making Tax Digital. You know the one - it's probably in that desk drawer labelled Things I Don't Want to Think About. Or on your to-do list that you're not currently to-doing.

Unfortunately ignoring MTD is a bit like standing on the railway track when a speeding train is approaching. You either get out of the way, or........

Well, you know it won't end well.

So we have a simple Easter message for you from DP Associates.

Panic not. We are here to help. We know this stuff. We know what buttons to press and we know how to keep you out of mischief from now on.

It's amazing how taking action - any action - can make a big problem seem smaller. And the action you can take is to contact us. Now. Not when the first quarter's deadlines are on you.

Hot news via AccountingWeb this morning.......

As of today, 5.65 million people who are in the HMRC self assessment system have not as yet filed their tax returns for the 2024-25 tax year.

Staggering.

By contrast 6.36 million already have their tax affairs sorted for last year, are fully compliant, and - most importantly - know what their liabilities are as the 31st January deadline for payment (and filing) approaches.

So out of a total of 12.01 million returns, 53% (near enough) have been filed and 47% - nearly half of all those due - are still unfiled.

Extraordinary.

Interestingly, 54,053 good citizens chose to ring in the new year, not with a party or a decent single malt (or whatever), but by filing their tax returns on new year's eve or new year's day.

If you're one of the 6.36 million - congratulations! You can relax (a bit) and finish up the remainder of the Christmas Quality Street with your mind at rest.
