As someone who calls HMRC on behalf of clients most weeks, this is not a surprise to me.
We have access to an "agent's decicated line" so shouldn't wait as long as those calling the generally available line.
Even so, I have waited up to an hour on hold for someone to answer.
Sometimes, their line takes you through all the usual preamble about calls being recorded etc only for the next voice to say "we are too busy to answer your call right now" and hang up. So rude!
Sometimes, it's useful to have an accountant in your corner who can answer your questions or, if not, get hold of HMRC more quickly.
