💷 Is your tax bill going to come as a surprise?

One of the biggest mistakes business owners can make is waiting until their tax bill arrives before thinking about how they're going to pay it.

Whether you're self-employed or running a limited company, planning ahead can make a huge difference.

A few things worth considering:

✔️ Are you regularly putting money aside for tax?

✔️ Do you have an idea of what your next tax bill might be?

✔️ Are you claiming the expenses and reliefs you're entitled to?

✔️ Could you make better use of your business profits before your year-end?

At KP Simpson, we don't believe you should only hear from your accountant when your accounts are due.

We work with businesses across the North East to help them plan ahead, understand their tax position and avoid unnecessary surprises.

💬 Not sure what you should be putting aside? Get in touch with our team for a chat.

It's always great to get out of the office and share what we know!

This week, Kallym and Charlotte represented KP Simpson at Dicipline - The Property Investment Academy - Steven Green , speaking to a fantastic group of business owners about the importance of understanding their finances and making the right decisions for their businesses.

At KP Simpson, we believe being an accountant is about much more than preparing accounts and submitting tax returns. It's about helping business owners understand their numbers, spot opportunities and plan for the future.

That's why opportunities like this are so important to us. We love being able to share our knowledge, offer practical advice and help people feel more confident when it comes to running their businesses.

Whether you're just starting out or have been running a business for years, there's always something new to learn!

A big well done to Kallym and Charlotte, and thank you to everyone who attended. We're looking forward to seeing how everyone's businesses progress!

📊 Busy business… but are you actually making money?

Running a business means making decisions every day. Whether it's taking on new staff, increasing your prices, investing in equipment or planning for growth, those decisions are much easier when you understand your numbers.

It's not just about knowing how much money is coming into your bank. It's about understanding what's left after expenses, what you need to put aside for tax and what your business can realistically afford.

Good financial information leads to better business decisions.

At KP Simpson, we believe accountancy should be about more than just submitting accounts and tax returns.

We work closely with local businesses across the North East, helping them understand their finances, plan ahead and make informed decisions with confidence.

With a dedicated Client Manager who knows you and your business, we're here to offer straightforward, practical advice throughout the year.

Still on a bit of a high from this one

Last week, we were awarded Highly Commended at the Regional Apprenticeship & Skills Awards 2026.

When we arrived, we genuinely didn’t have many expectations. We were already incredibly proud just to have been named as a finalist especially when we looked around the room and saw organisations such as Amazon, the British Army, HMRC and Sunderland City Council amongst the finalists.

We joked that we probably had fewer staff than some of them had apprentices!

So, as a small South Tyneside business, to stand alongside organisations of that size and then have the work we do recognised with Highly Commended was a really special moment for all of us.

Apprenticeships have been a huge part of KP Simpson for many years. Some of our team started their careers with us as apprentices and have gone on to become experienced accountants, managers and key members of the firm.. and now we get to watch the next generation begin that same journey.

For us, it has never just been about giving someone their first job.

An apprenticeship at KP Simpson isn’t about someone joining us for a year or two and then moving on. It’s about building a career.

It’s about giving a young person in South Tyneside an opportunity to build their confidence, develop their skills, discover what they’re good at and, most importantly, giving them the support and belief to build a career they can genuinely be proud of.

Watching someone walk through our doors at the very beginning of their working life and seeing how much they grow, both professionally and personally, is something we’ll never take for granted.

Apprenticeships really can change someone’s life. They give young people an opportunity to learn, make mistakes, grow in confidence and build a career they might never have imagined for themselves.

So to have what we do recognised at the Regional Apprenticeship & Skills Awards means more to us than just bringing home an award 💙

A huge thank you to Andy, Alex and Dawn for continuing to believe in young talent and giving people those opportunities, and to our entire team, past and present, who have helped make KP Simpson what it is today.

And especially, thank you to every apprentice who has trusted us to be part of the very beginning of their career.

We couldn’t be prouder.

Here’s to the next generation. 💙🏆

🏆 WE WON! 🏆

Such a proud day for KP Simpson as we were awarded Highly Commended in SME Apprentice Employer of the year at the Regional Apprenticeship & Skills Awards 2026 💙

Apprenticeships have always been a huge part of who we are. Seeing people join the team, learn, grow in confidence and build real careers within the profession is something we’re incredibly proud of.

For some of us, it feels even more special knowing we started our own careers as apprentices too and are now in a position to support the next generation coming through. 🥹

To have that commitment recognised today means so much to the whole team.

A very proud KP Simpson moment. 💙🏆

⚠️ Five common business mistakes we see....and how to avoid them

Running a business is busy, so it’s easy for the financial admin to slip. Some of the most common issues we see are:

• Mixing personal and business spending
• Not putting enough aside for tax
• Leaving bookkeeping until the deadline
• Losing or failing to upload receipts
• Taking money from the company without checking available profits

Individually, they may seem small but over time they can create inaccurate accounts, unexpected tax bills, cash-flow problems and overdrawn directors’ loan accounts.

Keeping your records updated and reviewing your figures regularly means fewer surprises and better decisions.

💷 Corporation tax bill due but not enough money in the bank?

Your corporation tax is based on taxable profits, not your current bank balance

During the year, cash may have been used for:

• Loan repayments
• Dividends or directors’ loan withdrawals
• VAT payments
• Equipment and other assets
• Stock that hasn’t yet been sold

These payments can reduce the money available without reducing taxable profit in the same way, which is why a profitable company can still experience cash flow problems

Regularly reviewing your figures and putting money aside for tax can help prevent an unexpected shortfall
