What would an extra month with your children every summer mean to you?

Many working parents don’t realise they may be entitled to unpaid parental leave.*

The challenge, of course, is that taking time away from work often comes with a financial cost.

That’s why, when I work with clients, we start with the life they want to live.

Do you want to spend more time with your family?

Reduce your hours?

Take a sabbatical?

Change careers?

Retire earlier?

Once we’ve identified the goal, we can build a plan around it.

This is the kind of detail I love exploring with clients. Not just investments and pensions, but all the practical options available to help create the life they want.

Because financial planning isn’t really about money. It’s about having the freedom to make choices that align with what matters most.

*In the UK, eligible employees can take up to 18 weeks of unpaid parental leave per child before their 18th birthday, subject to eligibility, notice requirements and employer policies.

If you earn over Ā£50,270, there’s a chance HMRC could owe you pension tax relief you’ve never claimed šŸ‘€

A lot of workplace pensions use something called a Relief at Source system.

That means:

* your pension provider automatically claims 20% tax relief for you
* but if you pay 40% or 45% tax, you are owed an extra 20% or 25% on top

And many people don’t realise you need to claim this back yourself.

A quick way to check:
āž”ļø Look at your payslip
āž”ļø If your pension contribution comes out after tax has been calculated, this may apply to you

If your pension is through:

* salary sacrifice
* a net pay arrangement
* or most defined benefit schemes

…you’re usually already receiving the full relief automatically.

Clients of mine are often surprised by how much they were entitled to claim.

Definitely worth a look - especially as you can normally backdate claims for the previous 4 tax years.

Comment PENSION and I’ll share the link on how to check.

Share and a tag a friend you think this could help!

The levels and bases of taxation, and reliefs from taxation, can change at any time. The value of any tax relief depends on individual circumstances.

It’s always a women who sheepishly tells me ā€˜I can be a bit of spender’…cue eye rolls from their husband across the table.

But what I see behind those expenses is a women who is in charge of family life.

Running a home.
Kids clubs and activities.
School - projects, uniform & shoes.
Change of season clothes.
Things for the house like new towels and bedding.
Beauty appointments to meet social expectations.
Feeding the 5000.
Hosting all the family over Christmas.
Remembering birthdays, presents, school events.
Researching and planning holidays that work for everyone’s budget and needs.
Covering all the extras no one else even thinks about.

Women are often making hundreds of small financial decisions every single week so that everything keeps moving.

And yet…

When it comes to the bigger conversations
the long-term planning, the future stuff - why are we leaving ourselves out of that - labelling ourselves as the ā€˜spenders’ or ā€˜not good with money’.

Of course sometimes they are impulse buys or things we regret.

But can we stop and make sure we’re not excluding ourselves or letting ourselves be excluded from those bigger conversations by using these labels.

It’s so so important we are part of both.

ā€œDo I need loads of money to work with a financial advisor?ā€

Probably one of the most common questions I get.

In reality, it’s not so much about the number you earn but about certain moments that come together with the right mindset.

I’ve outlined some of the key moments in this post.

And the mindset is being ready to make decisions, be intentional and actually use your money differently.

That’s when I think advice becomes valuable.

Retirement doesn’t have to mean bus passes and daytime TV.

It could mean Fridays off. Slow mornings. That business idea you’ve been sitting on. The extended trip you keep postponing.

Keep working if you love it. Stop if you don’t. Go part time. Start something new.

That’s the point is you should get to decide when and what it looks like.

This stage of life is full on.

Careers, businesses, kids, parents… taking a moment to think about your finances and where you’re heading may still not feel like a priority.

But this is also when you have the potential to make an impact.

Enough time to make a difference. Not enough time to waste.

If your idea of financial planning in 2007 was a Topshop store card, a student overdraft and 2-for-1 vodka Red Bulls… chances are you’re around 40 now and probably due a review.

This stage of life matters more than you realise.

Enough time to make a difference but no time to waste.

I loved working with Sarah and her husband recently - they were fully committed to getting a plan in place.

We focused on their goals, looked at their current circumstances and made sure everything was structured efficiently and that everything was properly protected.

So happy they have left feeling more confident.
