I was talking to a trades business owner recently.
Flat out.
Booked weeks ahead.
Phone buzzing constantly.
On paper, the business looked busy.
But he said something that stuck with me:
“I don’t feel like we’re making money.
I just don’t know where it’s going.”
He walked me through how they price jobs.
Nothing unusual. Nothing reckless.
Materials…
Labour…
Add a bit on top.
Every quote felt reasonable.
Every job should have made money.
Yet somehow:
one awkward job wiped out a good week
cash never seemed to build
and every month ended with the same quiet doubt
“Are we actually doing alright… or just getting by?”
He wasn’t failing.
He wasn’t lazy.
He wasn’t stupid.
He was doing exactly what most trades do.
And that’s the worrying bit.
Because if you’re busy, exhausted, and still not confident the numbers stack up…
At what point does “it’ll work itself out” stop being a plan?
