I know what you're thinking. Not another running post ! Well yes and no.

Last week I ran Cancer Research UK Race for Life with my mum, who started running in her 60's and my 16 year old son. The aim - to raise money for Cancer Research by running 5K around Houghton Hall.

Mum managed to raise £185 + Gift Aid.

Now for the non running bit. Did you know, if you donate to charity, Gift Aid can make your money go further - and reduce your tax bill.

When you tick the Gift Aid box:
• The charity receives an extra 25%
• Higher-rate & additional-rate tax payers can claim
extra tax relief through Self Assessment
• Regular donors can save more by keeping simple
records of their contributions

Its one of the easiest ways to support the causes you care about while maximising your tax relief.

Last weekend I took part in the Sandringham 24 hour race as part of a team with my wife Claire , brother Wayne and friend Martin. Wayne and I have previously taken part in the solo event, so it was nice to have less pressure (and mileage!) by being part of a team.

My nephew also ran the kids race so it was a busy weekend of running for The Gaytons. It’s a great event with fantastic support from fellow runners and I would recommend it to any runner.

Claire and I warmed up for the event by doing Sandringham park run beforehand 🤣

We all need something outside of work and running is my thing. It benefits your physical and mental health hugely. So much so that my Mum has just started running park run in her retirement, showing it’s never too late to start.

🏃 Gold medals and strong performances for West Norfolk AC

West Norfolk AC athletes enjoyed success on the track and trails, with Tom Green winning county gold in the 100m and Liam O’Dell claiming Eastern Masters Championship honours.

Club members also took on the Run Sandringham 24 challenge, with solo and team runners covering impressive distances across the 24-hour event.

Some of you may already be aware that we are approaching the end of National Volunteers’ Week. Those of you that know me well, know that I am the chairman of a local youth football club, West Lynn Football Club.

Grassroots football completely and utterly relies on volunteers giving up their time, as well as sponsorship from generous local businesses.

Another one of my passions is running and I am a keen park runner. Park run spans many countries, but again is run solely by volunteers.

If you are someone who could spare a bit of time, please consider looking into volunteering. It doesn’t have to be sport related, there are so many organisations and charities that are in need of support.

If several people give up some time, then a huge difference can be made.

The Great British Summer Savings initiative temporarily cuts VAT from 20% to 5% for select family activities and children’s meals. This reduced rate applies from 25 June 2026 to 1 September 2026.

The main areas covered are children’s meals from a children’s menu, which is consumed in a restaurant or hospitality venue. It does not apply to takeaway food.

It also applies to children’s and family admission tickets to cinemas, theatres, concerts, shows and exhibitions.

Admissions to qualifying family attractions such as theme parks, zoos, museums and soft play centres benefit from the reduced rate for all visitors, not just children.

If you are a business owner in this sector, you need to ensure your systems are set up to deal with this change.

That time of year again

Making Tax Digital or MTD as it’s commonly known is something many self employed people and landlords may well have heard of, but are they actually ready for it ?

The first quarter for filing your accounting information by digital means is the quarter ended 30 June/5 July 2026, ie the current financial quarter. The filing deadline for this quarter is 5 August 2026. That means you still have time to get yourself MTD compliant if you are not already.

If you had turnover (not profit) in excess of £50,000 for the tax year ended 5 April 2025, then you now fall into MTD. This is turnover/income from self employment (excluding partnerships) but including rental income.

Anyone with turnover/income above £30,000 from these sources will go into MTD from 6 April 2027.

If you watched my reel, you will know that I am a keen runner. Last weekend I completed the Manchester Marathon and was lucky enough to grab a pb.

It’s considered a flat marathon course, though maybe not completely flat to those of us from Norfolk! It’s also a popular course for first time marathon runners and my wife chose it for her first marathon.

The family marathon theme continued into this weekend as my eldest boy completed the London Mini Marathon.

The youngest also occasionally runs and this morning, on a rare Sunday without football, he won the local junior park run in a pb time.

It’s good to keep fit, but it’s even better when it’s something the four of us can all enjoy as a family.
