Micro and Small company changes paused again

The Government has paused plans that would have required small and micro companies to file more detailed financial information at Companies House from April 2028. Originally the changes were scheduled for 2027 but already postponed by one year.

The proposed changes would have increased the amount of financial information available publicly and potentially added to the administrative burden faced by smaller businesses.

The Government will now look at ways of simplifying and streamlining reporting between Companies House and HMRC, rather than businesses having to provide similar information separately.

A sensible and welcome rethink for small businesses.

Chancellor rules out budget CGT rise.
Surprising news given months of CGT rise speculation and previous PM comments. Technically a relief or exemption could be cut but no CGT rises this month.

Influential Labour figures had been pushing for equalising CGT and income tax, but critics have said this could drive wealthy people out of Britain.

Kemi Badenoch has announced that a future Conservative government would aim to remove Inheritance Tax (IHT) on family homes and retain a £1 million tax-free allowance for married couples and civil partners.

While this is only a proposal , it comes at a time when estate planning is becoming increasingly important. Under the current rules, a married couple can often pass up to £1 million free of IHT through a combination of the Nil Rate Band (£325,000 each) and Residence Nil Rate Band (£175,000 each), provided the family home passes to direct descendants . Upcoming changes will bring pension funds into the scope of Inheritance Tax from April 2027. Historically, pensions have often been one of the most IHT-efficient assets to leave to the next generation. Many families will find that a significantly larger proportion of their wealth is exposed to IHT at 40%.

Whether you support abolition of IHT or not, this highlights the importance of reviewing wills, pension nominations and succession plans sooner rather than later. Speak to us if you want to review your IHT planning.
