Is it rude to talk about money in your household?

In our newest edition of 'In Conversation,' our Interim Managing Partner, Jim Reeve, sat down with leading business journalist Ruth Sunderland to explore the importance of talking about money with your family.

Families will often talk about almost everything except money. Jim explores why conversations between generations can be so important, and why the idea that talking about money is rude could be holding families back from having conversations that matter.

In this edition, Jim and Ruth explore:
• Why families should feel more comfortable talking about money.
• How different generations can strengthen financial planning.
• Why continuity and succession planning matter.
• How experience and fresh thinking can benefit advisers and clients.
• The role of financial advice in navigating intergenerational wealth.

Money might not always be the easiest subject to bring up around the dinner table, but starting the conversation can help families better understand their options and plan for the generations to come.

The Bank of Mum and Dad: How much can you afford to give away?

"UK inflation rose to 3.1% in August, driven largely by higher fuel and travel costs. The Bank of England held interest rates at 3.75% yesterday, as it balances rising prices against weaker wage growth and employment.

Our lead article this week looks at the growing role of the ‘Bank of Mum and Dad’. Helping children with a house deposit, wedding or other major expense can make a real difference, but it is important to understand what you can comfortably afford."

7 things to understand before giving money to family

"A combination of rising costs, including higher household energy bills, helped push UK inflation up to 2.9% in July, its highest level in four months. With pressures on household finances continuing, keeping your financial plans under regular review remains important.

This week, we turn to passing wealth on to loved ones. Giving money during your lifetime can be rewarding and may also help reduce a future Inheritance Tax bill, but there are important things to consider before giving your money away."
