Back to reality… are your business finances in check? 👀

The summer holidays are coming to an end, routines are returning and September always feels like the perfect time for a bit of a reset.

But while you're getting back into business mode, when was the last time you properly checked in on your finances?

Now is a great time to:

✔ Get your bookkeeping up to date
✔ Review your income, expenses and cash flow
✔ Check you're putting enough aside for tax
✔ Make sure you're prepared for upcoming HMRC deadlines
✔ Get ahead with your Self Assessment
✔ Make sure you're on track with Making Tax Digital

A little bit of organisation now can save a lot of stress further down the line.

If your finances have taken a bit of a back seat over the summer, don't worry - we're here to help you get everything back on track.

How much should you be putting aside for your Self Assessment bill? 💷

It’s one of the most common questions we get asked - and unfortunately, there isn’t one percentage that works for everyone.

How much you’ll need to put aside will depend on things like your profit, other income, allowable expenses, National Insurance and whether payments on account apply to you.

Our advice? Don’t wait until January to find out what you owe.

Putting money aside regularly throughout the year and keeping your accounts up to date can help you plan ahead, manage your cash flow and avoid being caught out by a tax bill you weren’t expecting.

And with the 31st January 2027 Self Assessment deadline getting closer, now is a great time to get an idea of where you stand.

Not sure how much you should be setting aside? Speak to our team and we can help you plan based on your individual circumstances 👇🏼

Your September Business Finance MOT 🔍

September is just around the corner, and after a busy summer, now is the perfect time to give your business finances a quick check-up.

Before you head into a new month, ask yourself:

✔ Is my bookkeeping completely up to date?
✔ Do I know how my business is performing?
✔ Is my cash flow looking healthy?
✔ Am I putting enough aside for upcoming tax bills?
✔ Am I on top of Making Tax Digital requirements?
✔ Have I started thinking about my Self Assessment ahead of 31st January?

If you answered “not really…” to a few of those, use September as your opportunity to get back on track.

And remember, you don't have to sort everything yourself. Whether you need help with bookkeeping, tax, payroll, VAT, MTD or simply understanding your numbers, our team is here to help.

Start September feeling organised 👇🏼

Thousands missed the first Making Tax Digital deadline… were you one of them? 👀

The first Making Tax Digital for Income Tax quarterly deadline passed on 7th August, and if you were supposed to submit an update but didn’t, now is the time to get back on track.

The good news? HMRC has confirmed that no penalty points will be issued for late quarterly updates during the 2026/27 tax year.

But that doesn’t mean you can ignore it.

If you’re a sole trader or landlord with qualifying income over £50,000, you still need to keep digital records and submit your outstanding quarterly updates. Your next quarterly deadline is 7th November.

Missed the deadline? Haven’t signed up? Not sure what you’re supposed to be doing?

Speak to us. We can help you understand exactly what’s required, get everything in order and make sure you’re prepared for the next deadline.

Why wait until January to file your tax return? 👀

The deadline might be 31st January 2027, but that doesn't mean you need to wait until January to get it sorted.

Submitting your Self Assessment early means you can:

✔ Know exactly how much tax you owe well in advance
✔ Give yourself more time to budget for your tax bill
✔ Find and resolve any missing information without the panic
✔ Avoid the January rush
✔ Tick one big job off your list before Christmas

And one of the biggest misconceptions? Filing your tax return early doesn't mean you have to pay your tax early. Your payment deadline remains 31st January.

So why spend the next few months knowing it's still on your to-do list?

Get ahead now, send us what we need and head into the end of the year knowing your tax return is taken care of.

What does a proactive accountant actually do?

A proactive accountant doesn't just get in touch when your tax return is due.

They help you stay one step ahead, keeping you informed, answering your questions, and supporting your business throughout the year.

A proactive accountant will:
✔ Keep you up to date with important changes, like Making Tax Digital
✔ Help you plan ahead for tax bills, rather than leaving everything until the deadline
✔ Offer advice to help your business grow and become more tax efficient
✔ Be available when you need guidance or reassurance
✔ Build a relationship with you, understanding your business and your goals

At Advanced Accountancy, we believe your accountant should be more than someone who files your paperwork. They should be a trusted part of your team, giving you the confidence to focus on what you do best.

If your current accountant isn't providing that level of support, perhaps it's time for a conversation.

A question we get asked all the time... 💬*

"When should I speak to an accountant?"

The answer? Earlier than you probably think.

Whether you're thinking of starting a business, have just become self-employed, are growing your company, or simply have a question about your finances, it's always worth asking.

Getting advice early can help you avoid common mistakes, plan ahead, and give you confidence that you're making the right decisions from the start.

You don't need to wait until tax return season or until something goes wrong. Sometimes, a simple conversation is all it takes.

If you've got a question, we're always happy to help 👇🏼

The 5 biggest mistakes new business owners make 👇🏼

Starting your own business is exciting, but it's easy to make mistakes that could cost you time, money, and unnecessary stress. Here are five of the most common ones we see:

✔ Not putting money aside for taxSaving a little each month is much easier than finding a large lump sum when your tax bill is due.

✔ Mixing personal and business financesKeeping them separate makes bookkeeping simpler and gives you a much clearer picture of how your business is performing.

✔ Leaving bookkeeping until the last minuteKeeping your records up to date saves hours of catching up and helps you stay in control.

✔ Not asking for professional advice early enoughA quick conversation with an accountant can help you avoid costly mistakes and make better decisions from the start.

✔ Trying to do everything yourselfRunning a business is hard enough. Having the right people around you allows you to focus on growing your business while leaving the finances in safe hands.

The good news? Every one of these mistakes can be avoided with the right support. If you're starting a business or would like some guidance, we'd love to help 👇🏼
