Tax Return Season:

Saturday is 31 January and that is the deadline for submitting your 2025 Tax Return and it is the deadline for submitting any amendment required to your 2024 Tax Return.

It is also the deadline for paying HMRC any balancing payment of tax for 2025, plus to the deadline for paying the first instalment of the 2026 liability (if instalments are required).

Late filing of the tax return will result in an automatic penalty of £100 but that’s only the start. If the tax return is not filed within 3 months then HMRC can add a further £600 penalty, then another £300 after 6 months and
then another £300 after 12 months.

Late payment of tax will result in interest being added. The current rate of interest has been raised to 7.75% so it’s become very penal!

If the balancing payment is not paid within 28 days then HMRC can add a further 5% surcharge, then a further 5% surcharge after 6 months and a further 5% surcharge if the tax is still unpaid after 12 months. There is no surcharge for unpaid payments on account, but late payment interest will be applied.

Good luck. I’m giving all the team, myself included, the day off on Sunday 1st February so if you missed the deadline don’t call us 🤣

You can now download the HMRC app to check your tax position among other things.

Interesting thread this evening on Twitter.
I’m not convinced HMRC are proactive with this yet, but it might be coming especially with the continuing progress of AI: 👇

HMRC has sent over 4,300 letters to influencers and content creators:

"We have information that shows you've earned money from creating content on digital platforms."

Gifted products. Affiliate links. Brand deals. TikTok Shop.

They know more than you think. Here's what triggers a letter

🧵

HMRC's Connect system holds 55 billion items of data.

It pulls from 130+ sources:
-Banks
-Card payments
-eBay
-Airbnb
-Land Registry
-Even your Instagram.

It cost £80m to build.

Last year it recovered £4.6bn in unpaid tax.

You are not flying under the radar.

From January 2024, platforms like eBay, Etsy, Vinted, Depop and Airbnb are legally required to report your income directly to HMRC.

First reports landed on HMRC's desk in January 2025.

If you sold £1,700+ or made 30+ sales last year, they already have your details.

"I'll just use an overseas platform."

HMRC receives data from 106 countries through the Common Reporting Standard.

Dubai bank account? They know.
Swiss investment? They know.
Singapore crypto exchange? From 2027, they'll know that too.

That "free" PR package? Taxable.

If a brand sends you products in exchange for a post, HMRC treats the full retail value as income.

£500 skincare haul for an Instagram story = £500 added to your taxable income.

Doesn't matter that no cash changed hands.

The trading allowance is £1,000.

Earn over that from ANY combination of:

Brand deals
Affiliate commissions
Gifted products
Ad revenue
TikTok creator fund

You need to register for Self Assessment.

Most influencers hit this without realising.

Since 2013, HMRC has had legal access to every card payment your business receives.

All 8 major UK card processors (Worldpay, Barclaycard, etc.) report monthly totals directly to HMRC.

They compare your card receipts to your declared turnover.

Discrepancy? Investigation.

And yes, HMRC monitors public social media.

Maldives holiday on a £15k declared income? Flagged.

New Range Rover but Self Assessment shows £20k? Flagged.

Flaunting PR hauls you didn't declare? Flagged.

Connect builds lifestyle profiles and compares them to your tax return.

Didn't declare your influencer income?

Penalties range from 0-30% of unpaid tax for "careless" errors. Up to 100% for deliberate concealment.

Plus 7.75% interest on late payments.

And HMRC can go back 4 years. 6 if you were careless. 20 if deliberate.

If you haven't been declaring:

1. Don't panic
2. Don't ignore any letters
3. Voluntary disclosure = lower penalties
4. Get an accountant who understands influencer income

HMRC's Digital Disclosure Service exists for exactly this situation.
