Do you have a forecast?

Budgets are static.
Forecasts evolve.

A budget is what you planned at the start of the year.
A forecast reflects what is actually happening right now.

When revenue shifts, costs rise or opportunities appear, your forecast should move with it.

A live forecast helps you:

• Anticipate cash pressure before it hits
• Adjust pricing or spending early
• Plan tax proactively
• Make decisions based on evidence, not hope

It is one of the most powerful financial tools a small business can use.

Do you review your forecast each month?

If you would like help building or refining a practical cashflow forecast for your business, book a call with ABM Orkney Ltd and we will put a clear structure in place.

Real time reporting matters.

Decisions made on outdated information are rarely strong decisions.

If your books are three months behind, you are managing today’s business using yesterday’s data.

Real time bookkeeping gives you visibility of what is happening now:

• Current cash position
• Live profit levels
• Upcoming liabilities
• Debtor and creditor balances

That visibility creates control.
Control reduces stress.
Accurate data leads to better outcomes.

How up to date are your numbers today?

If you want timely, reliable figures that support confident decision making, book a call with ABM Orkney Ltd and we will review your current reporting setup together.

A financial strategy is not complicated.

It is knowing what you want, what it costs, and what needs to happen to get there.

Cashflow, pricing, margin, tax planning and investment decisions all connect.

Without a clear strategy, decisions become reactive.
With one, they become intentional.

When you understand your numbers, you can:

• Plan growth with confidence
• Manage tax proactively
• Set realistic profit targets
• Make informed investment decisions

What is one financial goal you want to achieve this year?

If you would like clarity around your numbers and a practical plan to reach that goal, book a call with ABM Orkney Ltd and we will map it out properly together.

Late invoicing leads to late payments.

Late payments weaken cashflow.

One of the fastest ways to strengthen your financial position is simple discipline.

Invoice immediately after completing the work.
Set clear payment terms.
Follow up consistently and without hesitation.

Small delays compound.
If you wait a week to invoice, and your client takes 30 days to pay, you have effectively extended credit by 37 days.

Cashflow improves when invoicing becomes routine, not reactive.

How quickly do you invoice after completing work?

If you would like support tightening your invoicing process and improving cashflow visibility, book a call with ABM Orkney Ltd and we will review your systems together.

If your systems feel slow, clunky or unreliable, it is rarely the software that is the problem.

It is usually the setup.

Poor chart structures, duplicated processes, inconsistent coding and unused automation create friction. Over time that friction becomes wasted hours and unreliable reporting.

A structured bookkeeping review can:

• Streamline workflows
• Remove unnecessary steps
• Automate repetitive tasks
• Improve reporting accuracy
• Strengthen cashflow visibility

Better systems do not just reduce admin. They improve decision making.

When your numbers are clean and timely, you operate with confidence rather than guesswork.

Which part of your bookkeeping feels harder than it should?

If you would like a practical review of your systems and clear recommendations to improve efficiency, book a call with ABM Orkney Ltd and we will go through it properly.

Most directors do not realise how much tax can be saved by using a planned combination of salary and dividends.

The right structure can:

• Reduce National Insurance
• Improve take home pay
• Maintain corporation tax efficiency
• Keep you fully compliant

What matters is choosing figures that fit your company’s actual profit and circumstances, not copying what another director is doing.

A structure that works for one business may be completely wrong for another.

A short review can show you:

• How much you can extract safely
• The most tax efficient split
• Whether you are triggering unnecessary tax
• How this fits with your wider plans

Do you know the ideal salary and dividend split for your business this year?

If not, book a call with ABM Orkney Ltd and we will calculate it properly based on your numbers, not guesswork.

Small business owners are resilient. We are used to doing a lot with a little.

But there are times when external funding is not a weakness. It is leverage.

Used correctly, it can stabilise operations or accelerate growth.

Signs you may need funding

You are turning away work
Demand is there, but you cannot afford to scale stock, equipment or staff to deliver it.

Cashflow pressure is constant
Every few months you are juggling payments. A working capital facility could smooth volatility.

An investment would clearly increase revenue
There is a purchase or expansion that would materially improve output or profitability, but it requires upfront capital.

You risk missing a time sensitive opportunity
Delaying until you have saved the cash may mean losing the opportunity entirely.

The timing is commercially sensible
Interest rates and lending conditions are workable, and preserving your own reserves provides security.

How to approach funding properly

Know the exact amount required
Be specific about what the money is for and how it will be used.

Understand the full terms
Interest rate, repayment schedule, fees and penalties. Read everything carefully.

Have clean financial information ready
Up to date accounts, cashflow forecasts and profit and loss reports. Lenders price risk. Clear numbers reduce it.

Consider the right type of funding
Bank loans, overdrafts, credit lines, invoice finance or government backed schemes all serve different purposes.

Stress test affordability
Will the increased revenue or efficiency comfortably cover repayments? If not, it may not be the right time.

Funding is not appropriate for every business or every situation.

But when aligned with a clear strategy and strong numbers, it can act as rocket fuel.

If you are considering funding and want clarity before making a decision, speak to ABM Orkney Ltd. We can review your numbers and assess whether it strengthens or strains your position.

When Did You Last Raise Your Prices?

Most small business owners undercharge.

Costs increase over time. Materials, software, utilities, insurance, your time.
If prices stay the same, margins shrink and stress grows.

If you have not adjusted your pricing in two years, you have effectively been giving a discount.

Start with your numbers.

Calculate your true profit margin on each product or service.
Total direct costs plus a fair share of overhead versus your selling price.

If the margin is thin, that is your signal. Even a modest increase can restore profitability.

Pricing also sends a message.

If you price too low, prospects often assume lower quality or less experience.
Higher pricing can attract clients who value expertise and are easier to work with.
Those who leave over a small increase are rarely your best clients.

If you are hesitant, start gradually.

An annual 3 to 5 percent increase keeps pace with rising costs and is rarely challenged.
If you have held prices static for years, a 10 to 20 percent adjustment may be necessary.

Give existing clients notice.
For example, from 1 April our rates will be X.

You are running a business, not a hobby. Price accordingly.

If you would like support reviewing your margins and pricing structure, contact ABM Orkney Ltd and we will work through the numbers properly.

The One Question That Changes Everything

When deciding whether to cut a cost or make an investment, ask one question:

What is the return on investment?

Not every decision gives you a neat spreadsheet answer. But forcing yourself to connect the dots changes how you think.

Cutting costs? Ask about ROI.

A £50 per month subscription you barely use
ROI of cancelling is £600 per year back in your pocket. Straightforward decision.

Cutting your marketing budget to zero
Saves cash short term but may shrink sales. Negative ROI.

Switching energy providers
Two hours of admin for £400 saved. Strong ROI.

Buying the cheapest materials
Lower quality may damage reputation and repeat business. Negative ROI long term.

Replacing a manual five hour task with £20 per month software
ROI is four hours of your time freed up to earn, grow or rest.

Investing in growth? Ask about ROI.

Hiring support when you are at capacity
If they help generate more revenue than they cost, that is positive ROI.

Marketing spend
If £1 in generates £2 out, that is scalable. But you need to track it.

Upgrading equipment
Large upfront cost, but if it increases output or reduces costly errors, it may pay for itself within a year.

Training and development
Often cheaper than hiring expertise and can unlock higher value services.

Some returns are harder to measure. The ROI of a proper office chair might not show up on a profit report, but your productivity and health will feel it.

Before any meaningful decision, ask:

If I cut this, will it hurt revenue or growth?
If I spend here, could it increase revenue, efficiency or profit over time?

That single question prevents reactive cost cutting and careless spending.

If you would like clearer insight into your numbers so you can measure ROI properly, book a call with ABM Orkney Ltd and we will work through it together.

Running a business can feel heavy when the numbers are not clear.

Most financial stress is not caused by poor performance.
It is caused by uncertainty.

Uncertainty around:

• Cashflow
• Upcoming tax liabilities
• Debt and commitments
• Profitability
• Forecasts

When you know what is happening with your cash, your commitments and your forward projections, the pressure lifts.

Clarity is one of the most underrated mental health tools in business.

Where do you feel the most uncertainty in your finances right now?

If you would like clear, structured insight into your numbers and a plan you can rely on, book a call with ABM Orkney Ltd and we will work through it together.
