πŸ’‘ TAX TIP FRIDAY

Haven't sorted out Making Tax Digital yet? You may soon hear from HMRC.

If you're self-employed or receive property income and your qualifying income was over Β£50,000 in 2024/25, you should already be using Making Tax Digital for Income Tax from April this year.

But I know there are still plenty of people who haven't registered.

If that's you, don't assume that because you haven't done anything, MTD doesn't apply to you.

From September, HMRC will start automatically registering people who, according to their records, should already be in MTD.

And here's the important bit:

HMRC registering you doesn't mean HMRC sorts everything out for you.

You'll still need to check the information they hold about your business or property income, start keeping digital records and use MTD-compatible software.

And because MTD started back in April, you may also need to catch up from 6 April 2026.

The first quarterly update was due on 7 August, so for some people there will already be records and submissions to catch up with.

The good news is that HMRC has confirmed there will be no penalty points for missed quarterly updates during 2026/27.

But please don't take that as a reason to leave it until January. 😊

If you're sitting there thinking:

β€œI have no idea whether this applies to me…”

or

β€œI know it applies to me, but I haven't done anything yet…”

We'll check where you stand and help you get everything set up and caught up properly.

πŸ’‘ TAX TIP FRIDAY

β€œI bought a gift for a client, so I can claim it.”
Not always.

In most cases, business gifts aren’t tax deductible.

There is a small exception for promotional items if they:

βœ” show a clear business advert
βœ” cost Β£50 or less per person per year
βœ” are not food, drink, to***co or vouchers

Examples that may qualify: branded pens, mugs, notebooks.

But:

❌ Alcohol, restaurant vouchers, or personal gifts are usually not allowable
❌ The £50 limit is per person per year (not per gift)

Also, VAT rules can apply if you go over the limit.

So don’t assume a business gift is automatically tax deductible.

πŸ’‘ Tax Tip Friday
Can my spouse work in my business?

Yes – they can.

But there are some important rules to follow.

If your spouse genuinely works in your business, you can usually employ them and pay them a salary.

However:

βœ” They must actually carry out work for the business.

βœ” The salary must be reasonable for the work they do.

βœ” You should keep records of the work performed, just as you would for any other employee.

Whether it's bookkeeping, administration, answering calls, marketing or helping with day-to-day tasks, the work must be real and the pay must reflect the duties.

If you're employing your spouse, you'll also need to consider:

β€’ Payroll and PAYE reporting.

β€’ National Insurance.

β€’ Pension auto-enrolment (where applicable).

Simply paying your spouse to reduce your tax bill, without them doing any genuine work, is not acceptable.

🚫 MYTH BUSTED

"I bought these trousers, shorts and trainers for work, so I can claim them as business expense."

Not necessarily.

This is one of the most common questions I receive from clients.

HMRC doesn't look at why you bought the clothes.

It looks at what the clothes are.

Generally, everyday clothing isn't tax deductible, even if you only wear it for work.

That includes things like:
❌ Trousers
❌ Shorts
❌ T-shirts
❌ Trainers
❌ Hoodies
❌ Jackets

You may be able to claim:
βœ” Uniforms with a company logo
βœ” High-visibility clothing
βœ” Safety boots
βœ” Protective clothing
βœ” Specialist clothing required for your job

Buying something specifically for work doesn't automatically make it an allowable business expense.

πŸ“© Not sure if you can claim it?

πŸ•οΈΒ Weekend mode: ON

This weekend I'm swapping spreadsheets, tax returns and emails for hiking boots, a tent and the beautiful scenery of the Lake District.

There's something special about leaving the laptop behind for a couple of days and enjoying nature.

Sometimes the best way to prepare for a busy week ahead is simply to slow down for a while.

I'll be back in the office on Monday evening, ready for another week helping my wonderful clients.

Are you doing anything special this weekend?

I'd love to hear your plans! 😊

πŸ’‘ Tax Tip Friday
Can I convert part of my home into a home office and claim the costs?

The short answer...

Yes – but there are important tax rules to consider.

Many business owners assume that if they convert a spare room, garage or garden building into an office, they can simply claim all the costs.

It's not always that straightforward.

Depending on your circumstances, you may be able to claim:

βœ” Some repair and maintenance costs.

βœ” A proportion of certain household running costs.

βœ” Capital allowances on some fixtures and equipment.

However...

❗ If part of your home is used exclusively for business, it could affect your Capital Gains Tax position when you sell your property.

This doesn't mean you shouldn't have a home officeβ€”but it's worth understanding the tax implications before making major changes.

πŸ“© Thinking about creating a home office or converting part of your home for business use?

Speak to Right Accounts before you start. A quick conversation could save you moneyβ€”and prevent unexpected tax consequences later.

🚫 MYTH BUSTED

"Meals are always tax deductible."

MYTH.

The answer depends on why you're buying the meal.

Some meals can be claimed as a business expense.

Others can't.

For example:

βœ” A meal while you're travelling for business may be allowable.

βœ” A meal during an overnight business trip may also qualify.

❌ Lunch at your local café because you're working on your laptop? Usually not.

❌ Taking yourself out for dinner after work? Also not a business expense.

The purpose of the expense matters.

HMRC's rules look at why the meal was purchased, not simply whether you discussed work while eating it.

πŸ“© Not sure whether a meal is an allowable business expense?

Speak to Right Accounts before claiming itβ€”we'll help you get it right.

🌊 A little behind the scenes...

Yesterday, my daughter and I (and the dog πŸ™‚) spent the day exploring the beautiful beaches at Bridlington and Flamborough Head.

There's something about the Yorkshire coastline that helps you slow down, take a deep breath and appreciate the simple things – fresh sea air, beautiful scenery and quality time together.

Weekends are for recharging, because Monday always comes around quickly!

Now it's back to helping my clients and looking forward to another busy week.

Did you discover any hidden gems in Yorkshire this weekend?

We'd love some ideas for our next family day out! β˜€οΈ

Have a wonderful week!

πŸ’‘ Tax Tip Friday

Do you invest in cryptocurrency?

Think you only pay tax when you cash out?

Not always.

In the UK, buying and selling cryptoassets such as Bitcoin or Ethereum can trigger a Capital Gains Tax liability.

You may need to pay tax when you:
βœ” Sell cryptocurrency for cash.
βœ” Exchange one cryptocurrency for another.
βœ” Use cryptocurrency to buy goods or services.
βœ” Gift cryptocurrency to someone else (in some circumstances).

Many people mistakenly believe they only need to tell HMRC when they transfer money back to their bank account.

That's not how the rules work.

Keeping accurate records of every crypto transaction is essential if you need to complete a Self Assessment tax return.

πŸ“© Bought, sold or traded cryptocurrency and not sure about your tax position?

Speak to Right Accounts before submitting your tax return.

🚫 MYTH BUSTED

"Children under 16 can't legally work in the UK."

MYTH.

This is something I'm asked surprisingly often.

My own daughter is 15 and occasionally helps me at Right Accounts with simple admin tasks, such as organising paperwork and receipts.

Many people are surprised to learn that children can work before they turn 16β€”but there are rules that both parents and employers must follow.

For example:

βœ” They can usually work from the age of 13.

βœ” Working hours are limited.

βœ” The work must be suitable for their age.

βœ” Many local councils require a Child Employment Permit.

Before my daughter started helping, I made sure I understood the rules so everything was done correctly.

Whether your child helps in a family business or has a part-time job elsewhere, it's important to make sure you're following the regulations.
