HMRC didn't send you a letter. I will. 📋
On 6 April, the biggest change to self-employed tax in 20 years quietly went live. It's called Making Tax Digital, and if your gross self-employment and rental income combined topped £50,000 on last year's return, you're already in it.
What changes:
✅ Digital records (software, not shoeboxes)
✅ Quarterly updates to HMRC: 7 Aug, 7 Nov, 7 Feb, 7 May
✅ A final declaration each 31 January
The catch most people miss: the £50k test is your income COMBINED and BEFORE expenses. A £29k business plus £22k of rent puts you over the line. And the thresholds keep dropping: £30k in 2027, £20k in 2028. This is coming for almost everyone who works for themselves.
Your first deadline could be 7 August 2026. That's weeks away.

Share this with one self-employed friend or landlord. The unprepared pay for this stuff, and August is close.
