When income arrives in lumps, it’s easy to pay yourself whatever’s left, then find the tax money isn’t there when you need it.
A simple routine can make things feel much steadier:
1. Set up a separate account for tax. As each payment lands, move 25–30% across. It’s a helpful starting point; the right amount depends on your circumstances.
2. Choose a fixed amount to pay yourself on a fixed date, based on what your business can afford.
3. Keep a buffer in the business for quieter months, so one slow patch doesn’t throw everything off.
Your setup may differ as a sole trader or company director, but the aim is the same: know what’s for tax, what’s for you, and what needs to stay in the business.
