Supporting local, one stitch at a time. 💙

When I decided to get some branded clothing for Spooner Accounting, I didn't have to look far.

I used Toolmonkey right here in Leighton Buzzard to create my new workwear and I love how it's turned out!

Two T-shirts, a hoodie and a cap, all with the Spooner Accounting logo.

Not only does it mean I can represent my business wherever I go, but I'm also supporting another local business along the way.

Local businesses supporting local businesses. That's something I really believe in. 💙

If you're a local business looking for branded workwear, definitely check them out.

When you find yourself standing next to a Liverpool legend… 👀❤️

We had a little family trip to Liverpool this weekend, finishing with a visit to Anfield

Look at my shirt…it's the 1987/88 Liverpool shirt. The season I was born in. I spent a long time trying to find one to wear to Anfield 😂

I could have just bought any old Liverpool shirt, but I wanted that one. The one that meant something. The attention to detail 🤗

And that's how I like to work with my clients too.
It's not just about getting the accounts done and ticking a box.

It's about knowing the details, understanding what's going on in your business and making sure the numbers actually make sense to you.

You build it. I'll count it. 📊

And if you're a Liverpool fan, I'm sure you'll appreciate this photo a little bit more than most! 😂❤️

What football shirt would you be wearing if you chose one from the year you were born? ⚽️

The Carpenter Pencil

This is such an exciting delivery for me today from Advent Tools ! 🥹💙

When I say I enjoy working with tradespeople, I really do find ways to show it! 😂

No more business cards being lost in the van, shoved in a drawer or thrown away…

My details are now on carpenter pencils. ✏️

So even if this gets thrown into your toolbox, it’s actually going to get used.

And every time you reach for it, you’ll see my name. 😉

Because one day… you’re going to become a client. 😏😂

I might as well make sure you remember who I am until then!

3½ months ago, I took a huge leap and started Spooner Accounting.

I didn’t have everything figured out. I didn’t know exactly how it would go. I started with no clients...and honestly, it was scary.

But I did know one thing....I wanted to try.

Because I’d rather try and discover it wasn’t for me than spend years wondering “what if?”

Has it been easy? Absolutely not. 😂

I’ve had days where I’ve questioned myself, worried, overthought things and wondered whether I was doing enough.

But I’ve also learnt something really important...

You don’t have to feel confident to start.

Sometimes the confidence comes after you take the leap.

I’ve learnt to back myself. There isn’t one right way to build a business. I’m doing it my way, learning as I go and figuring things out along the way.

And actually… I’m pretty proud of how far I’ve come. ❤️

I’ve also realised that progress doesn’t always look like huge milestones.

Sometimes it’s a new client.
A recommendation.
A lovely review.
A conversation that leads somewhere unexpected.
Or simply getting through a difficult week and carrying on.

So if there’s something you’ve been thinking about...

Starting something.
Changing something.
Trying something.
Going after something you’ve always wanted.

Maybe you don’t need to wait until you’re ready.

Do you have a dream, desire or passion?

What’s actually holding you back? ❤️

I spend my days tidying people's accounts…

And apparently my evenings tidying this 😂🧸

I’ve finally given my baby's play area a little upgrade, cleared out all the baby toys and made it more suitable for his age and, more importantly, what he actually loves playing with. ❤️

And it got me thinking…

That’s exactly how I work with my clients.

I don’t just bring things up to date, I make sure everything is useful for you and your business.

Every client is different, so I tailor what I do to what you actually need.

Now let’s see how long this stays tidy… 😂

🚐 55p a mile… but can you also claim your fuel?

This is one I get asked about a LOT by builders and tradespeople.

The answer is no 👀

There are two ways you can claim your vehicle costs:

🔹 The mileage rate
🔹 Your actual vehicle costs

And choosing the wrong one could mean you're missing out on allowable expenses.

I've broken down exactly what each method covers, when mileage tends to work best, when actual costs might win... and the important bit you need to know before you choose a method for your vehicle.

I've also covered the new 55p mileage rate, which was backdated to 6 April 2026.

If you've got a van doing a lot of miles for work, this is definitely worth a read.

Why is maths important? 🤔 We've all asked the question at some point.

"When am I ever going to use this?" The truth is, we use maths far more than we realise.

Whether you're working out if a supermarket offer is actually a good deal, comparing prices, or making decisions in your business, understanding the numbers helps you make more confident choices.

It's not about being brilliant at maths.

It's about looking at a number and thinking, "Does that actually make sense?"

That's one of the reasons I love accounting. It's not just about preparing the numbers; it's about helping business owners understand them.

Whether you're pricing a job, checking costs, or planning for the future, understanding your numbers matters. Because maths isn't just about getting the answer. It's about understanding what the answer means.

🎁 What is a trivial benefit?

Not every gift from your business creates a tax bill.

If you're a company director or employer, you could provide certain small gifts and perks completely tax-free, provided you follow the rules.

I've put together a simple guide explaining what qualifies, what doesn't, and the limits you need to know.

👇 Read the blog here:

If you're unsure whether something counts as a trivial benefit, just send me a message!

💐 Buying flowers to get yourself out of the doghouse?

If you run a limited company, your business might be able to pay for the apology instead 😏

HMRC's trivial benefits rules allow employers to give employees an occasional gift worth up to £50, provided certain conditions are met.

Think:
💇 Hair voucher
🍛 Meal out
💆 Spa treatment

If your partner genuinely works in the business, this could be a tax-efficient way to treat them.

💬 Comment "TELL ME MORE" and I'll send you my free blog explaining the rules.
