How would you feel about paying your income tax every month?

Would paying tax in smaller, more regular amounts make budgeting easier?

Or would it create new challenges for cash flow, financial planning, and admin?

HMRC is currently in consultation over potential changes to how self employed business owners, including directors and landlords pay their tax.

The consultation will close on August 4th

If you have an opinion, it is important that you have your say, now while you have the chance.

Would this make life easier or harder for your business?

When is a poppadom not a poppadom?

When HMRC says its a Crisp!
This sounds like the start of a joke, but for Walkers it was important

It was the subject of a real VAT tribunal.

Walkers argued that their Sensations Poppadoms were exactly that... poppadoms

▪︎Made with gram flour and other ingredients.

▪︎Designed to be eaten with dips.

▪︎Different in taste and texture.

▪︎Marketed as poppadoms, not crisps.

HMRC disagreed.

Their view was that, despite the name, they were:

▪︎Made from potato ingredients,

▪︎Similar to crisps,

▪︎Sold like crisps,

▪︎Eaten like crisps.

So they should be treated like crisps for VAT purposes.

The tribunal agreed with HMRC.

So why does this matter?

Because where poppadoms are treated like food for VAT purposes (zero Rated)

Crisps are standard-rated and attract 20% VAT.

It's a great reminder that in tax, the smallest details can have the biggest financial consequences.

So what do you think…

Walkers sensations - Crisps or Popadoms?

Some of the most expensive words we hear are...

"Sorry... I probably should have spoken to you about this sooner."

More often than not, we hear those words:

After a tax bill has arrived.

When cash is suddenly in short supply.

When business growth has slowed unexpectedly.

Or when a business has grown so quickly that its systems, processes and people simply can't keep up.

The reality is, most business problems don't appear overnight.

They develop gradually.

And more often than not, business owners tell us they had a feeling something wasn't quite right. They just decided to keep an eye on things for a little longer.

Having that conversation early can make all the difference.

Not because every issue has an easy fix.

But because the earlier you understand what's happening, the more options you usually have.

Problems that are tackled early are often simpler, less stressful, and less expensive to resolve.

So, if something doesn't feel quite right—or your business is changing in ways you weren't expecting—don't ignore that instinct.

A conversation today could save you money, worry, and a few sleepless nights tomorrow.

Is it just me, or does the heat change the way we all do business? ☀️

Over the last couple of weeks I've noticed something.

People seem a little more patient.

Emails aren't answered quite as quickly.
Meetings start with, "Is everyone surviving this heat?"
There's a little more understanding that we're all trying to do our best while the office (or spare bedroom!) feels like a greenhouse.

It made me wonder...

Why do we only give each other that grace when the weather forces us to slow down?

Business will always be busy.

There will always be another email, another deadline and another task waiting for our attention.

Maybe we don't need a heatwave to remind us that we're all human first.

Sometimes the most productive thing we can do is slow down, take a breath, and accept that not everything needs to happen immediately.

Do you feel like you only have time to look closely at your finances when something feels wrong?

By then, the warning signs may have been there for weeks or even months.

The good news is that you don't need to spend hours buried in spreadsheets to stay on top of your business.

A regular financial check-in can make all the difference.

Here are three things to review every month:

✅ Cash flow – Do you know what's coming in and what's going out over the next few weeks?

✅ Outstanding invoices – Are customers paying on time, or are unpaid invoices starting to build up?

or

✅ Invoicing – Are invoices being sent promptly, so you're not delaying your own cash flow?

✅ Profit and cash – Is your business showing a profit, but your bank balance doesn't reflect it?

You don't need to be an accountant to ask these questions.

Knowing the answers can help you spot potential issues early, make more confident decisions, and seek advice before small problems become bigger ones.

Ten minutes spent understanding your numbers today could save you hours of worry tomorrow.

Most of your paperwork is received electronically, so you’ll find it if you ever need it … right?

I speak to many business owners who dont see the relevance of spending time on documentation.

But

If you have a tax enquiry, HMRC will expect to see every single document.

If you dont have it, potentially every single item on your tax return could be rejected.

Every single piece of documentation is important.

Please find a process and a system that allows you to maintain accurate records.

There are many automated systems out there, and your accountants should be able to support you to make this process as simple and straightforward as possible.

If you dont currently have a process in place,

please get in touch.

It feels like a job that can afford to go to the bottom of the list, until it really matters.

A few minutes every day could save you a lot of time, stress, and money later.

Will there be enough accountants to support Making Tax Digital?

This is something even HMRC is questioning.

As the Making Tax Digital (MTD) income threshold reduces to £30,000 next year and £20,000 the year after, many more self-employed individuals and landlords will be brought into the scheme.

Until now, many smaller businesses have managed their own tax affairs or relied on bookkeepers for support. However, as MTD introduces more frequent and complex reporting requirements, more business owners are turning to accountants for guidance.

The challenge?
Many accountancy firms are still assessing how much additional work MTD will create. Until they have a clearer picture of the time and resources involved, it's difficult to confidently set pricing for these new services.

What we do know is that there is likely to be a steady rise in demand for professional support.

As often seems to be the way, the biggest impact of these changes is likely to be felt most by smaller business owners.

As an accountant, I still dont have all the answers.

If you have any specific questions, please ask, and I will update you as much and as soon as I can.

Do you think MTD will encourage more businesses to seek professional support, or will more people continue to manage their own tax affairs?

A quick reminder.

Your 2nd payment on account is due at the end of July.

To do now:
➡️ Check the amount outstanding.
➡️ Make sure the money is available.
➡️ If not, put provisions in place so that you will have available funds before the due date.
➡️ Check your holiday dates! - This sounds obvious, but you will be surprised how many people book a holiday, and don't remember to make the payment before they go!
➡️ If you are going to be away, make sure you make the payment before you leave.

If you have any doubt about making the payment on time, for any reason, please speak to an accountant now to avoid potential penalties later.

These few simple actions, taken now, could really help you relax on holiday

So many business owners try to take time off, only to spend their time worrying about what is happening at home and ultimately, logging on …just to be sure everything is ok.

➡️ Check off these simple actions now
and enjoy a proper break. 😎

1️⃣ Notify customers now of the dates you will be away.
Explain that you will not be contactable and, where possible, give them an alternative contact while you are away.

2️⃣ If you have orders due to go out, get them ready in advance so that you have peace of mind nothing will be missed.

3️⃣ Take care of the numbers:
If you have accounting software:
➡️ Make sure you have set up automated invoices and invoice reminders.
➡️ If possible give …
[18:01, 25/06/2026] Beth: thick of it!

✅ Finally and most importantly - give yourself permission to let go, relax and enjoy some time off.

Your business was started to give you freedom .
Enjoy the time off that you work so hard for.

What is the thing you worry most about when you are planning time away?
[21:19, 01/07/2026] Beth: This advice is hard to take, but it could save your business one day.

If you’re married and you run a business that isn't a limited company, you really must have a partnership agreement in place.

As much as people dont want to think about it, sometimes relationships break down.

It's a difficult enough time without the added issues of realising that your business is not exempt from the separation process.

We do recommend it to everybody, but very few take this advice because it is a difficult conversation, and no one wants to think that their marriage may end.

We understand how difficult it can be and will support clients through the process,

When the advice isn't taken, and the relationship ends, it can be additional heartbreak to see your business torn apart after years of hard work.

When you take out insurance on your home, it isn't because you want or expect to have to claim on it. Putting a partnership agreement in place doesnt mean you dont expect your relationship to work; it means you are protecting your business against every possible eventuality.

If you dont currently have a partnership agreement in place.

Please get in touch and we will support you through the process.
