🚨 Unpopular accountant opinion…

I don’t think the dog trainer with the most clients has automatically built the better business.

Sometimes a trainer is packed out every week, working six days, travelling all over the place and generating a higher turnover…

And sometimes another trainer is working fewer days, serving fewer clients and actually keeping more of what they earn.

Neither business is “wrong”.

They’re just built differently.

And that’s exactly why we don’t think turnover, client numbers or having a diary bursting at the seams tells you the whole story.

A successful dog training business isn’t always the busiest one.

Sometimes it’s the one that gives you the profit, flexibility and lifestyle you wanted when you started your business in the first place.

Because at the end of the day, turnover is vanity, profit is reality… and your time matters too.

Buying something specifically for work doesn’t automatically mean you can claim it as a business expense.

Branded uniform and qualifying protective clothing can be allowable, but ordinary clothing generally isn’t - even if you only wear it while working.

So before you put those new waterproof trousers, trainers or other clothes through your books, make sure you understand the rules. 🐾

I see so many pet professionals working incredibly hard, putting their clients first and going above and beyond for the animals in their care.

But somewhere along the way, it’s easy to forget that your business needs to look after YOU, too.

Your prices need to cover your expenses, account for your time, allow for tax and leave enough profit to pay yourself properly.

Because being passionate about animals doesn’t mean you should have to sacrifice your own financial security to do what you love.

You’re running a business, not a charity. And you deserve to make a living from it.
