Is Your Accountant a Relationship or a Transaction?
🌻
There are two kinds of accountants, and most business owners never ask which one they’ve got.
🌻
The first kind you hear from once a year. A reminder lands in January, the accounts get filed, an invoice arrives, and that’s it until next January.
🌻
The second kind you actually talk to. They know your business and are one of your first calls on any big decision.
🌻
One is a transaction. The other is a relationship. They’ll get you very different results.
🌻
A transactional accountant sells you a product: a set of accounts, a tax return, a payroll run. You pay for the output, and the output is all you get.
🌻
That’s fine if your business is simple and static. Very few are. You take on staff, buy a van, sell into Europe, think about stepping back. Each has a tax angle, and a transactional accountant only finds out a year later, when all they can do is record what happened.
🌻
The other sign is the meter. If you hesitate before ringing because you know it costs money, you’ll stop ringing. An accountant you’ve stopped ringing can’t help you.
🌻
A relationship-based accountant is closer to a partner than a supplier. The accounts still get done, but they’re the floor, not the ceiling!
🌻
• They know your business, not just your numbers. Their advice fits where you’re going, not just where you’ve been.

• They come to you. If a rule changes or your figures drift, you hear about it early, in plain English.

• You can pick up the phone. No clock running. The conversations that save you money tend to be the short, informal ones.

• They’re honest with you. Sometimes that means what you don’t want to hear🙈

The pricing model gives it away!
🌻
You can usually tell which type you’ve got by looking at how you’re billed.
🌻
Hourly billing pushes everything towards the transaction. It makes time the product and quietly punishes you for engaging. Fixed pricing flips the incentive. The accountant’s interest is in you having a good year, because that’s what keeps you around. Transparent fixed pricing isn’t a nice-to-have,it’s what makes the relationship version possible.

A quick honesty check

1. When did your accountant last contact you with something you didn’t ask for?

2. Do they know your plans for the next two or three years?

3. If an HMRC letter landed tomorrow, would you happily forward it straight to them?

4. Do you understand your own accounts when they explain them?

If the answers are “never”, “no”, “not really” ,you’ve got a transaction. Fine if that’s what you want, but a professional fee should buy more than a filing service.
🌻
At The Boss Partnership, we’ve always been on the relationship side, because that’s where we can make a difference. Compliance is the minimum. The value is in the conversations around it, and we price the way we do so those conversations can happen.
🌻
If you recognised your accountant as the first, it might be worth a chat. No meter running.🌻🚀

What should your accountant be spotting before you do? 👀
If you're a small business owner, your accountant should be helping you look ahead, not simply filing last year's accounts.

Regular management accounts can highlight tax planning opportunities, cash flow issues and areas affecting your business growth and profitability.

The earlier you spot something, the more you can do about it.

Is your Director’s Loan Account becoming a problem? 👀
A Director’s Loan Account is not the same as taking a dividend, and using your limited company like a personal bank account can have serious tax consequences.

If you're a limited company director, make sure you understand exactly what you're taking out and why.

Can you really put that through your business? 👀
Not everything you spend money on is a legitimate business expense, even if you’ve seen it claimed online.
Getting your expenses right can save you money and keep you out of trouble with HMRC.

No, you can't just put whatever you fancy through the business. 👀

We see so much advice online telling business owners they can claim clothing, hair, makeup and all sorts as business expenses.

The reality is, HMRC has rules around what is actually allowable.
Trying to claim something just because someone online said you can could leave you with a bigger tax headache later.

Our approach is simple. We give you the advice that keeps you tax efficient without putting you at unnecessary risk.
Want to know what you can legitimately claim through your business?
