From 1 April 2025, temporary Stamp Duty relief has ended and original thresholds are back:

🔹 General buyers now pay SDLT on property values above £125,000 (previously £250,000)
🔹 First-time buyer relief is reduced to £300,000 (was £425,000)
🔹 Buy-to-let and second homes face a 5% surcharge (up from 3%)
🔹 Companies purchasing properties over £500,000 now face a 17% tax rate (previously 15%)

The result: a surge in purchases before the deadline, followed by a 64% drop in transactions and falling house prices.

Companies House has announced a major change: from 1 April 2027, all UK companies will be required to file their annual accounts using commercial software.

Key changes:

• Web and paper-based account filings will be discontinued
• Profit and loss accounts will be mandatory for small and micro-entities
• Other reforms will follow, including updates to audit exemptions and accounting periods

These changes are part of the Economic Crime and Corporate Transparency Act 2023, aiming to:

• Improve data accuracy
• Reduce fraud
• Make the filing process more efficient

If your company already uses software, no action is needed. Everyone else has 21 months to prepare.

Starting soon, Companies House will require identity verification for all new and existing company directors, People with Significant Control (PSCs), and those filing on behalf of a company.

🔍 Why is this happening?

This change is part of a wider effort to improve corporate transparency, prevent fraud, and strengthen the UK's business environment.

✅ Who needs to verify their identity?

1. All new and existing company directors
2. PSCs (People with Significant Control)
3. Individuals who file documents on behalf of companies (e.g. agents, administrators)

🛂 How can you verify your identity?

You’ll be able to verify through:

1. Companies House directly, using a digital service linked to a GOV.UK One Login
2. An Authorised Corporate Service Provider (ACSP), such as your solicitor or accountant

📅 When does this come into effect?

The exact implementation date is still to be confirmed, but preparations are already underway. Identity verification will become mandatory in autumn 2025.

💡 What should you do now?

1. Make sure your company records are up to date
2. Prepare your documentation (passport, driving licence, etc.)
3. If you use an agent, check that they are registered as an ACSP
