3 guardrails before agentic AI goes live in AML: regulatory baselines, model risk, data readiness.

Governance decides who benefits.

Where does an AML analyst's time really go? Mostly on retrieving information: transaction history, customer records, sanctions results, previous alerts. The judgement, the part that needs a human, becomes the smallest part of the job. Agentic AI can reverse that. It gathers the information and assembles the case file, so analysts can spend their time on decisions. The aim isn't to remove the human. It is to make human oversight meaningful again.

Back in June I wrote about agentic AI in AML. Since then, it's become one of the most talked-about topics in compliance, so I've turned it into a video.

For payment firms in African corridors, the question isn't whether to use agentic AI. It's how to use it while staying in control: where it saves analyst time, where it needs guardrails, and what regulators will expect.

Five INTERPOL cybercrime assessments. One clear pattern.

Cyber-enabled financial crime in Africa is not necessarily becoming more diverse. It is becoming faster, cheaper, more scalable and harder to detect.

Across the assessments, familiar crimes keep returning — from business email compromise and online scams to ransomware, mobile-money fraud and digital sextortion.

What has changed is the enabling layer: commoditised cybercrime tools, social engineering, organised scam centres, and now AI-powered fraud and synthetic identities.

More digital access is creating enormous opportunity across the continent. But it is also expanding the attack surface for increasingly organised and scalable criminal networks.

I looked across five INTERPOL assessments to understand what this tells us about where cyber-enabled financial crime is heading — and what it means for banks, fintechs and everyday users.

Introduction Since 2021, INTERPOL has published successive assessments of Africa’s evolving cyberthreat landscape. Read together, they reveal something more interesting than a changing list of cyber threats: the same cyber-enabled financial crimes keep returning, but the way criminals carry them o...

How Agentic AI Can Benefit African Payment Firms

Rules-based AML monitoring is structurally failing African-corridor payment firms. Alert fatigue. Behavioural misclassification. Typology lag. The communities being over-policed are the ones posing the least risk.

Agentic AI can change this. But the governance has to come first.

Introduction Traditional transaction monitoring was designed for a payment world that no longer exists. For firms operating African-corridor mobile money, the question is no longer whether rules-based transcation monitoring is adequate, it is not, but whether Agentic AI can fill the gap responsibly,...

Terrorism financing in West Africa is no longer confined to the cross-border wire transfers and identifiable donor networks that many AML/CFT frameworks were designed to detect.

Groups such as JNIM, Islamic State–Sahel Province (ISSP), and Boko Haram increasingly draw on informal economies, illicit markets, local taxation, resource extraction, and digital tools, financing that may be generated and circulated largely within local economic systems, often outside the regulated financial sector.

In this piece, I examine how the financing model is evolving, where non-profit organisations remain vulnerable, how mobile money, virtual assets, and digital fundraising are changing the risk landscape, and what this means for AML/CFT frameworks. I also explore three structural gaps practitioners need to consider: visibility, typologies, and intelligence.

Introduction When al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) expanded from Algeria into the Sahel, it became part of a broader evolution in how terrorist organisations generate and sustain revenue. Today, groups like Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM), Islamic State–Sahel Province (ISSP), a...
