As autumn arrives, it could be a good time to pause and reflect on your financial picture.

Could you answer these five questions?

1. Am I on track for the future I want?
2. Do I know what I'm spending and where my money is going?
3. Is my savings and investment strategy still appropriate for my circumstances?
4. Do I have enough protection in place if life doesn't go to plan?
5. Do I understand how today's financial decisions could affect my long-term goals?

If you're unsure about any of these, you're not alone.

A conversation with a financial adviser could help you understand your options, consider what matters most to you and support your decision-making. The right next step starts with understanding where you are today.

AI is everywhere and can be a useful tool for explaining financial jargon, researching a topic or helping you explore ideas.

But when it comes to your money, there's an important difference between information and personalised advice.

FCA-commissioned research* indicates that consumers are increasingly using generative AI to help understand financial topics and seek guidance. While AI can provide useful information, it may not fully consider your personal goals, circumstances, attitude to risk or long-term objectives. It can also produce inaccurate or misleading answers.

Think of AI as a starting point, not the final answer. When your financial future is involved, personalised financial advice can help put information into context and support decisions that are right for your individual circumstances.

With a new academic year upon us, helping children through higher education is an understandable priority for many families, but it’s important to consider the long-term financial impact before making significant sacrifices.

Delaying retirement, reducing pension contributions or relying on future earnings can have lasting consequences that are difficult to reverse. Good financial planning can help families balance these competing priorities by looking at cash flow, savings, investments and realistic affordability.

Rather than seeing it as a choice between supporting loved ones or protecting your own future, a well-structured financial plan can identify ways to work towards both goals. Taking financial advice early may help families understand the options and the potential effect today’s decisions could have on their longer -term financial security.

We took a bit of time out recently to enjoy a lovely meal at Signor Sassi, celebrating Tara-Beth Donnelly birthday and our 11-year wedding anniversary.

Apparently, Steel represents 11 years of marriage, which symbolises strength, durability and the resilience of a relationship that has grown tough and dependable. Working together at Donnelly Financial Advice has certainly tested some of those qualities at times!

Thank you to Josephine Lee and Mark Oryang from Olive Tree Productions for joining us and making our celebration so enjoyable. What started out as a business connection has now turned into an enduring family friendship.

The food was amazing and we would recommend the restaurant. It's in , just a short distance from .

Autumn is a great time to get your finances organised - and that includes checking your pensions. It’s good to see where you’re at before the Autumn Budget takes place.

If you've changed jobs over the years, you could have several pension pots, or even one you've forgotten about. The lost pension service helps you to find contact details for a previous pension provider, the service does not confirm whether you have a pension or tell you its value.

Bringing pensions together may make them easier to manage and may reduce charges, but it's not the right choice for everyone. Some pensions include valuable guarantees or benefits that could be lost if transferred, so it's important to understand what you have first.

Once you've found your pensions, speak to us to discuss whether pension consolidation is suitable for your circumstances.

When people think about protecting their wealth, they often focus on savings, investments or property. But for many working-age adults, their most valuable asset is their ability to earn an income.

If illness or injury stopped you working for several months, would your emergency fund be enough to cover the mortgage, bills and everyday expenses? Income protection insurance is designed to replace part of your income if you're unable to work due to illness or injury, subject to policy terms and conditions, helping maintain financial stability while you recover.

It could be one of the most overlooked areas of financial planning, yet one that may provide reassurance for individuals and families alike.

Why is gifting back in the spotlight? With Inheritance Tax (IHT) and pension changes approaching, more families are reviewing how they plan to pass on wealth to future generations.

For many, lifetime gifting can be an effective way to reduce the value of an estate for IHT purposes, while helping loved ones when they may need support the most. However, gifting isn't simply about transferring assets. Once a gift has been made, it is usually irreversible, and there can be unintended consequences if circumstances change in the future.

That's why some families are taking time to consider not only how much to give, but also when to give it and whether they are comfortable giving up control of those assets. When it comes to passing on wealth, careful planning today can help provide greater certainty for tomorrow.

Tara-Beth Donnelly has been jet setting off to for a long weekend away with university friends.

Of course, they all sampled the legendary night life of Ibiza and went clubbing at Ushuaïa Ibiza and saw Calvin Harris, but they also took time to recharge, reconnect and relax while they were there.

Taking a break can sometimes refresh you and make you more focused when you come back to work. That's what Tara tells John anyway.

We hope you have all enjoyed a nice summer break away with family and friends and are ready for the next quarter. This is always a busy time for us at Donnelly Financial Advice and we’re looking forward helping our clients with their needs.

Government policy and economic developments can have implications for financial planning. As new information emerges, it's important to focus on what you can control and review your plans regularly rather than react to speculation.

We'll continue to monitor developments that could affect pensions, taxation, investments and wider financial planning, helping you understand any changes and identify opportunities where appropriate.

Whatever lies ahead, we'll continue to take a strategic, long-term approach and help you navigate changes with confidence.

Tara-Beth Donnelly was introduced to Josephine Lee from Tree Productions through business associates, however what started out as a business connection has now turned into an enduring family friendship.

Bringing the two families together has been beneficial for everyone, John Donnelly and Mark Oryang are now firm friends, and the children absolutely adore each other.

However, the business link was not forgotten when Donnelly Financial Advice wanted to shoot some client testimonial videos. Of course, their first choice was Olive Tree Productions, and we were very pleased with the results.

More recently Tara and Josephine decided they would take a bit of time out for themselves and opted for a evening at By Dirty Crunch in . Well-deserved break ladies. Hope you enjoyed it.
