📢 SELF ASSESSMENT DEADLINE REMINDER

Are you sending a PAPER tax return for 2025/26?

📄 Paper deadline: 31 OCTOBER 2026
💻 Online deadline: 31 JANUARY 2027
💷 Tax payment: normally due by 31 JANUARY 2027

Your paper return needs to REACH HMRC by 31 October — not just be posted by then.

If you're eligible to file online, you generally have longer to submit.

A simple tip: collect your bookkeeping, rental income, bank interest, dividend figures and other tax information before starting your return. Filing early also gives you time to budget for January.

PAYROLL CHECKLIST FOR SMALL BUSINESSES ✅

Running payroll isn't just about paying salaries. HMRC has deadlines throughout the year:

📍 BEFORE first payday — register as an employer.
📍 ON or BEFORE payday — send your Full Payment Submission (FPS).
📍 Normally by the 22ND after the tax month — pay any PAYE/NIC due electronically.

And if no one is paid in a tax month, check whether an Employer Payment Summary (EPS) needs to be sent instead.

Late or incorrect payroll submissions can cause penalties and problems for staff.

Mysimplytax Accountants helps limited companies and small businesses with payroll, PAYE and RTI submissions in Bromley, London and UK-wide.

🚗 SOLE TRADERS — ARE YOU STILL USING 45p PER MILE?

For 2026/27, HMRC's simplified mileage deduction is now:

✅ 55p for each of the first 10,000 qualifying business miles
✅ 25p for each business mile after that

The higher rate applies from 6 April 2026.

Keep a mileage log showing your business journeys, and remember: if you use the mileage flat-rate method, you cannot also deduct fuel, insurance and running costs for that vehicle.

This reduces taxable business profits — it isn't a mileage payment made to you by HMRC. Not every journey qualifies.

MTD FOR INCOME TAX — NEXT DEADLINE: 7 NOVEMBER

If you are already within Making Tax Digital for Income Tax, your second quarterly update is approaching.

An important point: the update is cumulative.

Standard periods:
6 April → 5 October

Calendar periods:
1 April → 30 September

So it is not simply a report for the latest three months.

Keeping the bookkeeping current throughout the year makes these submissions much easier.

Need help with MTD bookkeeping, software or quarterly HMRC updates?

Taking dividends from your limited company?

There is more to it than transferring money from the company bank account.

Before a dividend is paid:

✅ The company needs sufficient available profits
✅ The dividend should be formally declared
✅ Directors’ minutes should be kept
✅ A dividend voucher should be produced

Paying out more than the company’s available profits can create problems later.

We help limited company owners with accounts, tax, payroll and dividend planning.

Just registered for VAT? Check what you paid before registration. Eligible VAT on goods can normally go back up to 4 years if the goods are still held or used in the business, while services can normally go back 6 months. The claim is usually made on the first VAT return and needs supporting VAT invoices.

Is your home address showing publicly on Companies House?

Your company’s registered office address is public, so if you do not want your home address on the register, you should use a different suitable address.

It must also meet the Companies House appropriate address rules — company correspondence needs to reach someone acting for the company and delivery must be capable of being recorded.

Mysimplytax provides registered office support alongside company accounts and Companies House compliance.

Paying employer National Insurance? Check whether your business can claim Employment Allowance.

For 2026/27, eligible employers can reduce their employer Class 1 NI bill by up to £10,500.

A key exception is a limited company where one director is the only employee liable for employer NI.

If your payroll has changed, taken on staff or added another paid director, it may be worth reviewing your eligibility.

Mysimplytax supports businesses with payroll, PAYE and limited company accounts.

Income down? Reduce payments on account.

If your income or profits have fallen, your payments on account may no longer reflect what you actually expect to owe.

Payments on account are normally due on 31 January and 31 July, and are usually based on the previous year’s tax bill.

If your income is now lower, HMRC may allow you to reduce them.

Just be careful: if the payments are reduced too far and your final tax bill is higher, interest may apply.

It’s worth reviewing before 31 January.
