๐Ÿ† A proud moment for me and my business!

Iโ€™m delighted to share that SYLWIA KLOCEK LTD has been named Top Accounting Company of 2027 in the Women in Leadership โ€“ Top 100 โ€“ 2027 Awards.

After more than 20 years in accountancy and building a practice that now supports over 400 limited companies across the UK, this recognition means a lot to me.

What started with a simple goal โ€” to make accounting and tax less stressful and more understandable for business owners โ€” has grown into something Iโ€™m incredibly proud of.

A huge thank you to my clients for their trust and loyalty over the years. And, of course, to everyone who has been part of the journey. โค๏ธ

Top Accounting Company of 2027 โ€” I think Iโ€™ll enjoy saying that one for a while! ๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ†

๐Ÿ“ข MTD for Self-Employed โ€“ What Should You Do Now?

If youโ€™re self-employed or receive rental income, itโ€™s a good idea to start preparing for Making Tax Digital now rather than waiting until the last minute.

Here are 5 steps you can take today:

โœ… Check whether your income exceeds the MTD threshold.
โœ… Make sure youโ€™re keeping your income and expense records up to date.
โœ… Store your documents digitally.
โœ… Choose suitable accounting software.
โœ… Speak to your accountant about your MTD preparation plan.

Many business owners leave their bookkeeping until the end of the tax year, but the new rules will require more regular record-keeping and better organisation.

โš ๏ธ The earlier you prepare, the smoother the transition to MTD will be.

The good news? For most people, MTD does not mean paying more tax. It is mainly a change in how records are kept and how information is reported to HMRC.

Thank you for following this series on Making Tax Digital. If youโ€™re still unsure whether MTD applies to you, or you need help preparing your business, feel free to get in touch.

๐Ÿ“ฉ Iโ€™m always happy to help.

Today Iโ€™m attending the Leaders in Accountancy Conference at 155 Bishopsgate, Liverpool Street.

Always valuable to step away from the day-to-day work, learn from industry experts, and bring fresh ideas back to support our clients and practice.

Looking forward to an inspiring day of learning and networking.

๐Ÿ“ข MTD for Self-Employed โ€“ Can I Still Use Excel?

One of the most common questions I hear is:

โ“ โ€œCan I continue using Excel for my bookkeeping under Making Tax Digital?โ€

The answer is: it depends.

HMRC requires digital records and electronic submissions through compatible software.

๐Ÿ“Œ A spreadsheet alone will not be enough unless it is connected to HMRC through additional bridging software.
๐Ÿ“Œ Many business owners will find it easier to switch to cloud accounting software.
๐Ÿ“Œ Good software can automatically import bank transactions, track expenses, and help you stay compliant with MTD requirements.

Popular options include:

โœ… QuickBooks
โœ… Xero
โœ… FreeAgent
โœ… Clear Books

The best choice depends on the size of your business, your budget, and how comfortable you are with technology.

โš ๏ธ Waiting until the last minute could lead to unnecessary stress and rushed decisions. The sooner you choose a system, the more time youโ€™ll have to get used to it before MTD becomes mandatory.

Not sure which software is right for you?

Leave a comment or send me a message, and Iโ€™ll help you find the best option for your business.

๐Ÿ“ข MTD for Self-Employed โ€“ What Will Quarterly Updates Look Like?

One of the biggest changes under Making Tax Digital (MTD) is the requirement to submit quarterly updates to HMRC.

Sounds complicated? In practice, it simply means regularly reporting your business income and expenses.

โœ… Every 3 months, you will submit a summary of your income and expenses to HMRC.
โœ… It is not a full tax return.
โœ… You will not need to calculate your exact tax liability each time.

Itโ€™s important to remember:

๐Ÿ“Œ Quarterly updates are for reporting purposes only.
๐Ÿ“Œ You will still complete a final declaration after the end of the tax year.
๐Ÿ“Œ Your final tax liability will be calculated based on the year-end submission.

The aim is to give both you and HMRC a clearer picture of your business finances throughout the year, rather than waiting until the Self Assessment deadline.

โš ๏ธ For most business owners, the biggest challenge will not be submitting the updates โ€“ it will be keeping their bookkeeping up to date throughout the year.

If youโ€™re currently leaving your bookkeeping until January, now is the perfect time to start getting organised.

In my next post, Iโ€™ll explain which software can be used for MTD and whether Excel will be enough.

๐Ÿ“ข MTD for Self-Employed โ€“ What Will Actually Change?

Many people think Making Tax Digital (MTD) means paying tax more often. Fortunately, thatโ€™s not the case.

โœ… You will still pay your tax in the usual way.

What will change is how you keep your records and report your income to HMRC.

Under MTD, you will need to:

๐Ÿ“Œ Keep digital records of your income and expenses
๐Ÿ“Œ Use compatible software
๐Ÿ“Œ Submit quarterly updates to HMRC
๐Ÿ“Œ Submit an End of Period Statement and Final Declaration after the tax year ends

This means HMRC will receive information throughout the year rather than waiting until the Self Assessment deadline.

โš ๏ธ MTD is not an additional tax.
โš ๏ธ It does not mean you will pay tax four times a year.
โš ๏ธ It is a new way of reporting your business and rental income.

The sooner you move to digital bookkeeping, the easier the transition will be.

In the next post, Iโ€™ll explain what quarterly submissions look like and whether they need to be accurate down to the last penny.

๐Ÿ“ข MTD for Self-Employed โ€“ Does It Apply to You?

From April 2026, some self-employed individuals and landlords will be required to follow HMRCโ€™s new reporting system โ€“ Making Tax Digital (MTD).

โ“ Who will need to comply with MTD from 6 April 2026?

โœ”๏ธ Self-employed individuals (sole traders)
โœ”๏ธ Landlords with rental income
โœ”๏ธ Anyone whose combined income from these sources exceeded ยฃ50,000 per year

If your income was:
๐Ÿ“Œ Over ยฃ50,000 โ€“ MTD applies from April 2026
๐Ÿ“Œ Over ยฃ30,000 โ€“ MTD applies from April 2027
๐Ÿ“Œ Below ยฃ30,000 โ€“ you are not currently required to join, although HMRC plans to expand the scheme in the future.

โš ๏ธ Important:
The threshold is based on your INCOME (turnover), not your profit.

In my next posts, Iโ€™ll explain:
โœ… What MTD actually is
โœ… How often you will need to submit information to HMRC
โœ… Which software you can use
โœ… What penalties may apply if you do not comply

Not sure whether MTD applies to you?

Leave a comment saying โ€œMTDโ€ and Iโ€™ll be happy to help.

Self-Assessment made simple, not stressful. โœ…

If your return is coming up, here is a quick 5-step check to stay organised:

1. Gather income records
2. Set aside your tax payment
3. Check pension and mileage claims
4. Review dividends and expenses
5. Submit early if you can

A little preparation now can make January feel much lighter.
If you would like a calm review of your figures, send us a message.

๐Ÿšจ A major change may be coming for UK businesses.

HMRC is currently running consultations on mandatory e-invoicing โ€” similar to systems already being introduced across parts of Europe.

So what does this actually mean?

In the future, businesses may be required to send and receive invoices in a structured digital format that accounting software can automatically read and process.

This is much more than simply emailing a PDF invoice.

Sounds technical? Donโ€™t worry ๐Ÿ™‚
In practice, the goal is to simplify processes, reduce manual data entry, minimise errors and speed up document processing.

๐Ÿ“Œ At the moment, nothing changes immediately โ€” this is still at the consultation stage.

However, businesses that start preparing their systems and processes early are likely to be one step ahead.

If youโ€™re unsure:
โœ”๏ธ whether your accounting software will be ready
โœ”๏ธ what e-invoicing could mean for your business
โœ”๏ธ whether itโ€™s worth making changes now
