Are you all up to date with your bookkeeping for the tax return due by 31st Jan?

Do you know…
How much your phone bill is or percentage you used it for work ?
How much you spent on materials or software?
How much mileage are you going to claim?
Is everything in one place and easy to go through?

Get your books done now and your tax return won’t be a nightmare 👻

Yup, you read that right , you can claim an extra 10p a mile on your first 10,000 business miles for the current tax year 26/27 🙌🏻

The tax return for 25/26 which is due by 31/01/27 is still the 45p a mile rate on the first 10,000 business miles , and the 25p per mile over 10,000 remains the same with no changes

Rates for the current tax year 26/27 are :
Cars & Vans 55p a mile
Motor Cycles 24p a mile (no change from previous)
Bicycle 20p a mile (no change from previous)

Note: you can claim mileage for travel for business but not to the same place of work

Example : mobile hairdressers travelling to different houses to work can claim the mileage , a hairdresser in a salon can’t claim to drive to the same salon each day

Hope this helps someone reading this today! 🫶🏼

Has your bookkeeping been banished…

Don’t keep putting off your bookkeeping, consider this your little nudge to get up to date before January (you need everything from apr25-apr26)

Make a coffee. Start small. We don’t need a dramatic round table over a missing receipt….

Please don’t be the person adding to the already very long list of a fellow small business owner

We are seeing clients (and ourselves) chasing too many invoices lately!

chasing invoices takes up more than time.
🙄It’s the not being paid for a time slot put aside or work already done
🤔 Deciding when to chase again.
🫤Wondering whether you’ll sound pushy.

All while carrying on with the actual work.

So if you’re tired of chasing, we get it.
Asking for payment shouldn’t take this much headspace.

Paying on time gives another business owner one less thing to carry.

How many times have you chased for payment in the last few weeks?

We’re here banging on about Making Tax Digital again (sorry not sorry)

Please do check if you met the threshold to start in April (£30k income before expenses in the tax year 25/26)

You will need to source software, learn how to use it correctly , be confident with it and link it to HMRC (that’s after you’ve registered for MTD )

Then the real fun starts , keeping your bookkeeping up to date so you can submit figures to HMRC every 3 months …..

Not sure what to do, or where to start? Comment or DM us MTD and we can point you in the right direction✌🏼

Unfortunately, no we don’t have a magical way of speaking with them 🙃

The hold music is like a constant ringing in our ears and the website is the main reason we face plant our desks on the regular 👍🏼

That’s our contribution to the internet today😆 , happy Friday ✌🏼

🚨 Newly self-employed? HMRC would quite like an introduction…

If you started working for yourself between 6 April 2025 and 5 April 2026 and you need to complete a Self Assessment tax return, you must register with HMRC by 5 October 2026

This isn’t the deadline for filing your tax return ,it’s the deadline for telling HMRC that you’re self employed and need to complete one.

Once registered, HMRC will issue your Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR), which you’ll need when submitting your return.

Your online tax return and any tax owed will then be due by 31 January 2027 (calculated from income and expenses in the 25/26 tax year)

Basically: don’t wait until January to introduce yourself to HMRC. They’re not known for enjoying last minute surprises… and neither are we. 😅

Not sure whether you need to register? Please ask before assuming we’re always happy to point you in the right direction.

Save this reminder or share it with someone who started their business during the 2025/26 tax year.

Yup we’re talking making tax digital … AGAIN

To make accurate quarterly submissions, your bookkeeping needs to be kept up to date throughout the year which means recording your income, uploading receipts, categorising expenses and reconciling the bank account regularly.

The good news? Once your software, bank feed and receipt portal are properly set up, the process becomes far easier to manage.

And if the thought of registering with HMRC, connecting software and remembering another set of deadlines makes you want to quietly close the laptop…that’s exactly what we’re here for.

Save this as your monthly MTD checklist or send it to someone who is still hoping HMRC will forget about the whole thing…

There’s something extra lovely about supporting small at this time of year.

Cosying up in an independent coffee shop, buying your Halloween bits from a local maker or starting the Christmas shopping somewhere that isn’t a giant warehouse.

Small businesses are incredibly resilient. We adapt, keep going and somehow find new ways to show up, even when running a business feels like three full time jobs wearing our “big” coat.

Every order, booking, share and recommendation genuinely matters. It keeps our high streets full of personality, supports families and helps brilliant local businesses make it through another year.

So this autumn, shop small when you can. Your support means more than you probably realise 🫶🏼

Tag your biz or favourite independent business below so we can all discover somewhere new 👇🏼
