Could your pension leave your family with a bigger tax bill than you expected?
Changes due to come into force from April 2027 mean most unused pension funds and death benefits will be brought into estates for inheritance tax purposes (source: The Times, August 2026).
A new article in The Times looks at the potential knock-on effects, particularly for larger estates.
There could be inheritance tax to consider. If the pension holder dies aged 75 or over, beneficiaries may also pay income tax when withdrawing inherited pension funds. And including pension wealth within an estate could push more estates above the £2 million threshold where the residence nil-rate band begins to taper.
The exact impact will depend on individual circumstances, and more than 90% of estates are still expected to pay no inheritance tax under the changes.
But if you’ve spent years building pension wealth and assumed it would sit outside your estate, it’s worth understanding what the new rules could mean for your plans.
It also raises a much wider question: what do you actually want to happen to your wealth?
Do you want to leave an inheritance? Help your family during your lifetime? Make sure you have enough for your own future first? And if you’re the person receiving an inheritance, what should you do with it?
Rebecca will be exploring these questions in our complimentary Generational Wealth Planning webinar on Thursday 17 September at 12pm.
