Selling through Amazon, eBay or Etsy? Proposed VAT changes could affect how VAT is collected on certain UK marketplace sales.

HMRC is considering extending existing online marketplace VAT liability rules, potentially shifting responsibility for charging and accounting for VAT from qualifying UK sellers to the marketplace.

The proposals are aimed at tackling non-compliance and creating a fairer environment for businesses that already meet their VAT obligations.

The rules are not final yet, but online sellers should stay informed, keep accurate records and understand how any future changes could affect their VAT processes.

Crypto gains from years ago can still create a tax problem today.

HMRC is increasing its focus on cryptoassets, and selling isn’t the only transaction that can count as a disposal. Exchanging one cryptoasset for another, spending crypto, or gifting it can also have tax implications.

If you’ve never reported previous crypto gains, now is a good time to review your transaction history and understand your position rather than waiting for HMRC to contact you.

Changes could be coming to the way some Self Assessment tax is collected through PAYE from April 2029.

For people who complete Self Assessment and also receive income through PAYE, HMRC plans to collect more of the tax due directly through salary or pension during the year.

The detailed rules are still being developed, so now is the time to stay informed, keep accurate records and understand how future changes could affect your cash flow.

We’ll keep you updated as more details become available.

However, the detailed system is still being developed. HMRC consulted during summer 2026 on how the new timely-payment model should work.

HMRC’s approach to tax records is becoming increasingly digital, so keeping your records clear and accessible matters more than ever.

From invoices and bank statements to VAT workings, payroll information and accounting records, HMRC may request relevant information where it has the legal right to do so.

The takeaway? Good digital records aren’t just about compliance, they can make tax checks quicker, clearer and less stressful.

Possibly. The government has consulted on making Direct Debit the mandatory payment method for VAT and PAYE return liabilities, subject to defined exceptions. The consultation ran from 23 June to 16 August 2026, but a final implementation decision has not yet been announced.
