Under Making Tax Digital for Income Tax, submitting four quarterly updates does not replace your annual tax return.

Quarterly updates summarise your business or property income and expenses, while the annual return includes other taxable income, adjustments, allowances and reliefs to calculate your final tax liability. For 2026/27, the annual return is normally due by 31 January 2028.

Taxcare Accountancy can help with digital bookkeeping, quarterly submissions, tax adjustments and annual returns to ensure accurate reporting and HMRC compliance.

Making Tax Digital for Income Tax can give sole traders and landlords a more up-to-date estimate of their tax position during the year, based on income and expenses recorded through compatible software.

However, the figure is only an estimate because other income, tax adjustments, allowances, losses and reliefs may still affect the final amount due. Keeping digital records accurate can make the estimate more useful for cash-flow planning and setting money aside for tax.

Taxcare Accountancy can help with MTD bookkeeping, quarterly updates, tax estimates and final tax returns.

HMRC can now sign up some sole traders and landlords for Making Tax Digital for Income Tax if its records show they were required to join from 6 April 2026.

Even if HMRC enrols you automatically, you still need compatible software, digital records and quarterly updates. If your circumstances have changed or you think MTD should not apply, you should check your HMRC records and contact HMRC where necessary.

Taxcare Accountancy can help confirm your MTD position, set up software and bring your reporting up to date.

The temporary VAT reduction lowered VAT to 5% on qualifying children’s meals and certain family attractions from 25 June to 1 September 2026. The relief covered eligible children’s meals, family admission tickets and selected attractions, while other items and activities kept their normal VAT treatment.

As the relief has now ended, affected businesses should make sure their VAT rates and records have been updated correctly.

Taxcare Accountancy can help review VAT coding, qualifying sales and returns to ensure the relief was applied properly.

If your income falls below the MTD for Income Tax threshold, you cannot usually leave straight away. HMRC generally requires qualifying self-employment and property income to remain below the relevant threshold for three consecutive tax years before you can opt out.

An amended return or stopping all qualifying activities may affect your position sooner. Before stopping digital records or quarterly updates, check your eligibility first.

Taxcare Accountancy can help review your MTD position, qualifying income, quarterly reporting and Self Assessment requirements.

The UK temporarily reduced VAT to 5% on qualifying children’s meals and certain family attractions from 25 June to 1 September 2026.

The relief covered eligible children’s meals, family tickets and admissions to attractions such as zoos, theme parks and soft-play centres, while some supplies remained under normal VAT rules. From 2 September 2026, businesses returned to the usual VAT treatment.

Taxcare Accountancy can help hospitality and leisure businesses review VAT rates, correct VAT coding, prepare VAT returns and ensure qualifying sales were treated correctly.

Mileage allowance and fuel reimbursement follow different HMRC rules. Employees using their own car or van for business travel can use approved mileage rates, while employees using a company car may be reimbursed using HMRC’s Advisory Fuel Rates. Keeping the two systems separate and maintaining clear journey records helps businesses avoid payroll and tax errors.

20/08/2026

HMRC’s approved mileage rate for employees and directors using their own car or van for business travel increased to 55p per mile for the first 10,000 business miles, with 25p per mile thereafter. Employers do not have to pay the full 55p, but employees paid less may be able to claim Mileage Allowance Relief on the difference. Only genuine business journeys qualify, so accurate mileage records are essential.

Taxcare Accountancy can help businesses review mileage policies, check expense claims, manage PAYE treatment and ensure director and employee reimbursements are recorded correctly and remain HMRC compliant.

HMRC plans to require most amended Company Tax Returns to be filed online from 1 April 2027, extending the digital approach already used for original returns. Around 95% of amendments are already submitted electronically, but businesses still using paper methods will need to move to compatible commercial software. The usual amendment deadline is not changing, and companies can generally amend a return within 12 months of the normal filing deadline.

Accurate bookkeeping, tax computations and supporting records will remain essential to make corrections quickly and avoid errors. Taxcare Accountancy can help with Company Tax Returns, amendments, Corporation Tax calculations, digital bookkeeping and HMRC correspondence.
