Q4 is here. How healthy is your business?

October is the perfect time to step back and review the numbers that really matter before year-end.

Are you tracking:
✅ Cash flow
✅ Outstanding debtors
✅ Gross profit margins
✅ Overheads and fixed costs
✅ Tax liabilities
✅ Forecast sales vs actual performance
✅ Progress against your business goals

The businesses that finish the year strongest are often the ones that review their performance now, not in January.
A simple financial health check can help uncover opportunities to improve profitability, strengthen cash flow, and plan with confidence for the year ahead.

A recent tribunal case saw a w**e distributor's R&D tax claim rejected by HMRC after the business was unable to provide sufficient evidence that its project met the requirements for R&D tax relief. The result? The company lost its claim and faced a significant repayment.

With HMRC continuing to scrutinise R&D claims, it's more important than ever to ensure that:
✅ Your project genuinely qualifies for R&D tax relief
✅ You can demonstrate a scientific or technological advance
✅ Detailed records and supporting evidence are available
✅ Any claim submitted is accurate, robust and fully supported

Many businesses are approached by third-party firms promising substantial R&D refunds. Before proceeding, make sure you speak to your AIMS Accountant.

We're here to help you understand whether a claim is appropriate, identify any potential risks, and ensure you're making informed decisions based on the latest HMRC guidance and tribunal outcomes.

The cost of a coffee might be small. But when you run a business, it’s often the smaller recurring costs that quietly build up over time.

It could be:

☕ Software subscriptions you rarely use
☕ Supplier price increases
☕ Bank or payment fees
☕ Insurance or utilities coming up for renewal
☕ Regular services that no longer offer the same value

October is a good opportunity to look through your outgoings and check where your money is going.

Small savings can make a useful difference to your cash flow over the course of the year.

Your AIMS accountant can help you understand your costs and keep a closer eye on your business finances.

Three quarters of the year down. How is your business performing?

The end of Q3 is a great time to compare your plans with what has actually happened so far.

Here are 5 areas worth reviewing:

✅ Revenue - Are sales meeting expectations?

✅ Expenses - Have your costs increased?

✅ Cash reserves - Do you have enough available for upcoming commitments?

✅ Debtors - Are customers paying you on time?

✅ Forecasts - Does your Q4 budget still reflect your plans?

Regularly checking your numbers can help you identify issues early, spot opportunities and make better-informed decisions for the final quarter.

Your AIMS accountant can help you understand what your figures are telling you and plan for the months ahead.

Newly self-employed? There’s an important October date to be aware of.

If you need to complete a Self Assessment tax return for the previous tax year and haven’t registered before, you may need to tell HMRC by 5th October.

September is a good time to:

✅ Check whether you need to register

✅ Make sure your income records are organised

✅ Review your allowable business expenses

✅ Start gathering the information you’ll need for your return

Getting organised early can make Self Assessment much easier, and give you more time to deal with any questions before the January deadline.

Not sure what you need to do? Your local AIMS accountant can help.

It might only be September, but for businesses relying on Christmas trade, financial planning may already need to be underway.

A busy festive period can mean spending more before the additional revenue starts coming in.

Things to start thinking about include:

🎄 Stock and supplies

🎄 Seasonal employees

🎄 Supplier payment dates

🎄 Marketing costs

🎄 Expected changes in sales

🎄 Working capital

Understanding when money will leave and enter your business can help you prepare for potential cash-flow gaps.

If Christmas is an important trading period for your business, your AIMS accountant can help you forecast ahead and make sure your finances are ready.

Inflation and interest rates regularly make the headlines, but what could changes in the economy mean for your business?

They can affect areas such as:

📈 Supplier and operating costs

💷 The cost of borrowing

🛒 Customer spending

👥 Wage pressures

📊 Cash flow and financial forecasts

While you can’t control changes in the wider economy, you can prepare your business for different scenarios.

Regularly reviewing your forecasts can help you understand how changing costs, sales, or borrowing expenses could affect your finances, and give you more time to respond.

An AIMS accountant can help you understand the numbers behind your business, and plan ahead with confidence.

When you’re busy running a business, it can be easy to focus on today’s priorities and put longer-term financial planning to one side.

Pension Awareness Day is a useful reminder for business owners to think about the future too.

That could mean reviewing:

✅ Your workplace pension responsibilities

✅ Employer contributions

✅ Your own retirement plans as a business owner

✅ How longer-term financial goals fit alongside your business plans

Making time to review your position now can help you build a clearer picture of your future finances.

Your AIMS accountant can help you consider pensions as part of your wider financial planning.
