Summer can quietly wreck your cash flow 😬 Here's how to stay on top of it:

1️⃣ Invoice early — decision-makers go on holiday and payment runs slow down. Don't let your invoices get stuck in an out-of-office.

2️⃣ Review payment terms — consider 14-day terms for new projects or deposits upfront for August work.

3️⃣ Build a buffer — model your receipts and outgoings through to September now. If you can see a dip, arrange a facility before you need it.

4️⃣ Watch your VAT date — if your quarter ends 31 July, your payment is due 7 September. Factor it in.

✅ Capital gains positions
✅ ISA allowance (£20k per person)

January deadline? That's 6 months away. But the best time to start your self-assessment is right now 👇

Here's why:

✅ Your records are fresher in July than they will be in December
✅ Early filing means you know your tax bill months before it's due — better for cash flow planning
✅ Rushed January returns are more likely to have errors or missed reliefs

What to pull together now:
— All income sources (self-employment, rental, dividends, interest)
— Business expenses and receipts
— P60 and P11D from any employments
— Pension contributions and Gift Aid donations

Get ahead of the queue — accountants are at their busiest between November and January.

Got a side hustle? HMRC is watching more closely than ever 👀

Here's what you need to know:

💰 Under £1,000 gross income? You're covered by the trading allowance — no tax to pay and no need to declare.

💰 Over £1,000? You must register for self-assessment and declare it.

📲 Selling on eBay, Etsy, Vinted, Airbnb or Fiverr? Platforms now report your earnings directly to HMRC — so they may already know.

🔍 HMRC uses "badges of trade" to decide if you're running a business or just having a clear-out. Regular, systematic activity = taxable.

The 31 January 2027 deadline covers any undeclared 2025/26 side income.

The Employment Rights Act 2025 is the biggest shake-up in UK employment law for decades — and several changes are already in force 👇

What's changed:

👷 Day-one unfair dismissal rights — new starters are now protected from day one (with a statutory probation period of up to 9 months)
🕐 Flexible working is now a day-one right — and refusals must be objectively justified
📋 Zero-hours workers can request a contract based on average hours after 12 weeks

What SME employers should do now:
✅ Review employment contracts, especially probation clauses
✅ Update your flexible working policy
✅ Audit any zero-hours arrangements
✅ Train managers on day-one rights

Is your accountant saving you money — or just filing your returns?

A genuinely proactive accountant will:

✅ Plan your tax position throughout the year, not just at filing time
✅ Spot reliefs and grants you're not claiming
✅ Talk to you before big decisions, not after

When did yours last proactively contact you with something that saved you money?

If you're not sure — it might be time for a fresh conversation.

Big changes are underway at Companies House — and some require action from directors right now 👇

Key things to know:

🪪 Identity verification is now required for all directors and PSCs. If you haven't verified yet, you need to do this via GOV.UK.

📄 Small companies will soon need to file a full profit & loss account — the option to hide this from the public register is being removed from April 2027.

💻 Paper and web filing is being phased out in favour of software-only filing for accounts.

🏢 PO boxes are no longer valid as registered office addresses.

Don't get caught out — check your compliance now.

Running a limited company? Here are 6 ways to make sure you're keeping as much of your money as possible 👇

1️⃣ Salary at the right level — up to £5,000 protects your State Pension with no Employer NI hit

2️⃣ Dividends — taxed lower than salary, no NI, and you have a £500 annual allowance before tax starts

3️⃣ Pension contributions — tax-deductible for the company, no Income Tax or NI for you

4️⃣ Director's loan account — money you've put in can come back out tax-free

5️⃣ Business expenses — mileage, home working, subscriptions — claim them properly

6️⃣ Family on payroll — if they genuinely work in the business, use their allowances efficiently
Most directors are only using one or two of these. The right combination depends on your situation.

July is packed with tax deadlines 📅 Here's your SME checklist:

✅ 6 July — P11D deadline (now passed — file immediately if not done)
⚠️ 19 July — Class 1A NI due (cheque/BACS)
⚠️ 22 July — Class 1A NI due (electronic payment)
⚠️ 31 July — Second self-assessment payment on account
⚠️ 31 July — Corporation Tax due for Oct 2025 year-ends
🔁 19/22 Monthly — PAYE & NI for June payroll

Miss any of these and HMRC charges interest and penalties automatically.

Filed your P11D already? There's one more step to go ✅

Class 1A NI is the employer National Insurance on the benefits you declared — and it's due:

📅 19 July if paying by BACS or cheque
📅 22 July if paying electronically

It's calculated at 15% on the total value of benefits reported on your P11D(b). Easy to miss if you're not expecting it.

Made an error on your P11D? You can file an amendment — but do it quickly to avoid compounding penalties.
