VAT Threshold: When Do You Need To Register Your Business For VAT?

It's one of the questions we're asked most often by growing businesses.

In this blog, Jugmeet explains, in plain English:
- what the VAT threshold is
- when VAT registration becomes mandatory
- key things to keep in mind as your business grows

If you run a business in the UK, VAT is something you’ll hear about quite early on. But many business owners are not clear on when they actually need to register. Here’s a simple explanation...

We all make mistakes - but some tax mistakes can be surprisingly expensive. 🫣

Jugmeet highlights some of the most common ones we see and how they can be avoided. 💡

Most tax mistakes don’t happen because business owners are doing something wrong on purpose. They usually happen because no one explained things clearly, or because tax gets pushed down the to-do list...

Do I Need an Accountant to Start a Business?

Starting a business comes with plenty of questions, and one of the most common is whether you need an accountant from day one.

Anuja shares when it makes sense to get support and how it can save you time, money and stress.

One of the first questions many new business owners ask is: "Do I need an accountant?"

Flat Rate VAT Scheme: Is It Worth It?

The Flat Rate VAT Scheme can save some businesses time and money - but it's definitely not the right fit for everyone.

Anuja breaks down how it works, who it's best suited for, and when it might actually cost you more.

The Flat Rate VAT Scheme is one of those things that sounds brilliant when you first hear about it. Less paperwork. Simpler VAT returns. Less time spent dealing with HMRC...

🚀 If you're planning to bring in external investment for your business, it's worth understanding how the UK's SEIS (Seed Enterprise Investment Scheme) and EIS (Enterprise Investment Scheme) can make your business more attractive to investors.

This helpful guide from the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) explains:

✅ How SEIS and EIS work
✅ Current funding limits and eligibility criteria
✅ Recent EIS changes introduced in April 2026
✅ Why Advance Assurance can help give investors confidence

SEIS and EIS don't provide tax relief to the business itself, but they can make a real difference when it comes to attracting investors and securing funding. Many successful startup funding rounds are structured around these schemes.

Over the years, we've helped many ambitious businesses navigate EIS and SEIS successfully, and if you'd like to explore how these schemes could support your fundraising plans, we'd be happy to have a chat!

A guide for UK small businesses to SEIS and EIS: how they work, current limits, the April 2026 EIS expansion, and applying for advance assurance.

Our 2025 Impact Report is live! 🌍

Just over a year ago, we published our very first Impact Report.
Today we're happy to share the 2025 edition.

For us, this isn't about having all the answers or celebrating perfection (no one's perfect!). It's about measuring what matters, being transparent, and continuing to hold ourselves accountable as we continue working towards creating more positive impact and doing business better.

Every day is an opportunity to learn, improve and do.

As Heather, our Founder, says in her letter at the beginning of the report:

"Reflecting back on 2025, it was the most amazing year with some of the biggest, most impactful changes that the company has seen in its 22 years of existence.

Most importantly, this was the year that a decades-long wish was fulfilled and we started becoming an employee owned business. Our three longest serving employees became owners in the business and started their journey as stewards of the business. It has been one of the great joys in my life to see them blossom and grow and start taking the reins of the business.

2025 was also the year where we became B Corp certified. We have always run the business with the principals that underpin the B Corp ethos, but to be validated and certified as such was a great accomplishment. It has also led to us meeting a large group of other B Corp businesses that are always inspiring.

On a more personal note, I have started to semi retire now that the company's future is being looked after by the employees, and I have loved using that time to mentor other business owners and to provide more pro bono work for charities and CICs.

Here's to 2026!” 🌱♻️🤝💫🧡

🎮 Developing a video game? One important tax decision could have a bigger impact than you think.

With the move from Video Games Tax Relief (VGTR) to the new Video Games Expenditure Credit (VGEC), it's not always obvious which scheme will give you the best outcome. The answer depends on your project, your costs, and when development began.

In this article, Jing breaks down:

- The key differences between VGTR and VGEC
- Who can still claim under the old scheme
- Common pitfalls to avoid
- How to work out which option is right for your studio

If you're a game developer, publisher, or work with businesses in the gaming industry, it's well worth a read. 📖

Yesterday evening was … sunny indeed 😎 so we headed out to join fellow B Corps at the June London B Social in support of 🧡

It was fantastic to spend the evening with so many purpose-driven businesses - catching up with familiar faces, making new connections, sharing ideas, and celebrating the growing movement for better business.

The Better Business Act is campaigning for a simple but important change to UK company law, reflecting what many businesses already believe: success shouldn't be measured by profit alone, but by the positive impact we create for our employees, customers, communities and the environment.

Businesses of all sizes can get involved by supporting the campaign and adding their voice to the growing number of organisations calling for a Companies Act that reflects the challenges and opportunities of today's world.

A huge thank you to the team at B Lab UK for organising another fantastic B Social, to Bates Wells for hosting us, and to everyone who helped make the evening such a success. Events like this remind us that we're part of something much bigger than our own businesses.

If you want to learn more about the Better Business Act and how your business can get involved, check out the link in the comments.
