Are your contractors actually getting their holiday pay?

It’s one of the most common questions in umbrella payroll, and one of the easiest things to get wrong without anyone noticing

How it builds up

Most workers are entitled to 5.6 weeks of paid holiday a year. For variable hours, that accrues at 12.07% of the hours worked.

What “rolled up” means

Holiday pay is added to each payslip as you go, rather than saved for when you take time off. You get a little extra each week, but time off is then unpaid, so it pays to set that money aside.

How to check you’re getting it

Is holiday pay shown as its own line on the payslip?

Does the figure look right? On £1,000 of pay, you’d expect roughly £120.

Can your umbrella show you your holiday balance or a statement on request?

If the answer to any of those is “not sure”, ask the question.

For recruitment agencies: this is also a useful due-diligence check on your umbrella supplier. Clear holiday pay reporting is usually a good sign of a well-run, compliant provider.
