The 31 July payment may be complete, but the planning job is not. Reconcile it, update the forecast and check whether your tax reserve still reflects the year you are actually having. A quick review now can surface a cash-flow gap while there is still time to respond. This is general information; payment calculations and reductions depend on individual circumstances.

The first MTD for Income Tax quarterly deadline passed on 7 August. If you were in scope and missed it, do not ignore the position or assume the quarterly update was your tax return. HMRC says no penalty points will be applied for late quarterly updates in 2026/27, but digital records and required updates still matter. Check what applies to you and speak to your accountant about the cleanest next step.

If Making Tax Digital applies to you, the real shift is getting your records organised before the deadline pressure starts.

Making Tax Digital is not just an August problem. If it applies to you, your records, software, and income and expense categories need to be clean before the first update. Prepare early so the deadline is a review, not a scramble.

Paying less tax legally is not about loopholes. It is about using the right allowances, structures, and records for your situation. Before acting on a viral tax tip, check what applies to you.

The VAT threshold is not something to check once a year. It is based on taxable turnover over a rolling 12-month period, so growth can bring the deadline closer than expected. If your sales are picking up, review your position early.

Making Tax Digital is not just an HMRC phrase. It changes how some self-employed people and landlords keep records and report income.

From 6 April 2026, MTD for Income Tax applies to sole traders and landlords with qualifying income over £50,000. That means digital records, compatible software, quarterly updates, and a tax return process that needs to be organised earlier.

If you are still relying on a spreadsheet, paper receipts, or a once-a-year scramble, now is the time to review your setup.

The best time to prepare is before HMRC makes it mandatory for you.

Self-employed and working from home? You may be able to claim the business portion of some running costs, but the key word is portion. Use a reasonable method, keep records, and get it checked before it goes on your return.

Your accountant should do more than file the return.

For a UK business owner, the real value often comes before the deadline: checking your profit position, reviewing expenses, planning salary and dividends, looking at pension contributions, and spotting issues before they turn into tax surprises.

Good tax planning is not about tricks. It is about making informed decisions early enough for them to count.

If you only hear from your accountant when something is due, it may be worth asking what planning opportunities you are missing.
