It is with deep sadness that we mark the passing of Kanya King CBE, founder of the MOBO Awards. A phenomenal woman, an innovative entrepreneur, and a true pioneer of Black British music and culture. Her family shared that she passed away peacefully on 3 June 2026.
Through the MOBO Awards, Kanya elevated Black British music, championed diverse talent, and created opportunities for generations of artists. Her vision, determination, and impact have left an indelible mark on the UK’s cultural landscape. They will continue to inspire for years to come.
Last year, we were incredibly proud to present Kanya with the Black British Business Awards ICON Award. The ICON Award recognises an individual of African or Caribbean heritage whose achievements and legacy have transformed their industry and shaped British culture. Few have embodied it so completely.
Welcoming Kanya to the stage, Dr Sophie Chandauka MBE, Chair and Executive Founder of the Black British Business Awards, said: “Celebrated internationally. Revered as a symbol of bold vision, proud heritage, and breathtaking creativity. This year’s winner is more than a business leader and industry influencer. She is an architect of CULTURE. She is an ICON.”
Our thoughts are with Kanya’s family, friends, colleagues, and all those whose lives she touched.
