It is with deep sadness that we mark the passing of Kanya King CBE, founder of the MOBO Awards. A phenomenal woman, an innovative entrepreneur, and a true pioneer of Black British music and culture. Her family shared that she passed away peacefully on 3 June 2026.

Through the MOBO Awards, Kanya elevated Black British music, championed diverse talent, and created opportunities for generations of artists. Her vision, determination, and impact have left an indelible mark on the UK’s cultural landscape. They will continue to inspire for years to come.

Last year, we were incredibly proud to present Kanya with the Black British Business Awards ICON Award. The ICON Award recognises an individual of African or Caribbean heritage whose achievements and legacy have transformed their industry and shaped British culture. Few have embodied it so completely.

Welcoming Kanya to the stage, Dr Sophie Chandauka MBE, Chair and Executive Founder of the Black British Business Awards, said: “Celebrated internationally. Revered as a symbol of bold vision, proud heritage, and breathtaking creativity. This year’s winner is more than a business leader and industry influencer. She is an architect of CULTURE. She is an ICON.”

Our thoughts are with Kanya’s family, friends, colleagues, and all those whose lives she touched.

In this episode, he also speaks on:
-The impact of winning a BBBAward and how it’s influenced his career
-Knowing your strengths and leaning into them
-Championing others and lifting as you climb

Just 3 months until Judging Day!

It is one of the most important moments in the Black British Business Awards calendar, as we come together to decide our 2026 finalists.

As we count down, let’s throw it back to last year’s Awards, where our red-carpet host Remel London spoke with some of our 2025 judges about why they chose to take on this important role. Their answers were powerful and deeply moving — reminding us of the responsibility, pride, and purpose behind judging and championing Black excellence.

Hear from our 2025 judges: , Tanya Ballaram and

We often talk about diversity and inclusion at work.
But what does it actually look like in practice?

In our latest episode of , we spoke to our 2025 BBBAwards Senior Leader, Sekidde, whose work shows how powerful advocacy can be. From supporting employees observing Ramadan to scaling a global ERG across 20+ countries at GSK, this is what meaningful change looks like.

It’s why he’s been recognised on the .people’s Empower Role Model Lists supported by YouTube - celebrating leaders creating workplaces where people of colour can thrive.

Are you driving similar change?

Head to the link in our bio to find out how you can take part in the Empower Role Model Lists 2026.
