Ascentant Founder Kevin Drew recently joined Mark Lee (BookMarkLee) and Philippa Haynes (Pinnacle Global) on the Accountants Success Secrets podcast to talk about his business journey.

With Ascentant reaching its 10-year anniversary this year, it was a chance to look back at how the practice has developed, the mistakes made along the way, the lessons learned and what Kevin is still learning today.

Over the last 10 years, Ascentant has grown into a practice with two offices, a growing team and specialist expertise in legal cashiering and working with law firms, alongside its accountancy services.

Kevin also talks honestly about the realities of growing a practice – from the things that didn't go to plan in the early days, to adapting, making changes and continually looking at how the business can improve.

A really interesting conversation about the journey so far, the lessons along the way and what comes next for Ascentant.

🎧 Keep an eye out for the episode!

Thinking about hiring a young person? There could be funding available.

The Youth Jobs Grant could provide eligible employers with £3,000 towards employing a young person aged 18 to 24.

The scheme is open to employers of any size, including sole traders, and can be used for eligible paid jobs of at least 25 hours a week for a minimum of 4 months.

Young people recruited through the scheme must be:

- Aged 18–24
- Claiming Universal Credit and have been unemployed for at least 6 months
- Recruited through the scheme rather than someone you already employ

The grant can also be used alongside eligible apprenticeship funding, so it could be worth considering if you're looking to take on an apprentice.

Another milestone for Adam!

A big well done to Adam Roome, our Accounts Assistant, who is currently studying towards his AAT Level 4 Diploma in Professional Accounting with EMA training.

Adam has recently passed two more modules: Business Tax and Drafting & Interpreting Financial Statements - it’s great to see him continuing to build his knowledge and develop his skills.

Adam is an integral part of the accounts team here at Ascentant and we’re really pleased to support him as he works towards his qualification.

We look forward to seeing what he achieves next - well done, Adam!

🚨 ONE WEEK TO GO 🚨

Could 12 months of free accountancy support make a difference to your organisation or business?

We’re giving three organisations the opportunity to receive a full year of free accountancy support from Ascentant – and there’s now just ONE WEEK left to nominate.

We’re looking for:

📍 1 × CIC in Ripley & surrounding areas
📍 1 × CIC in Derby & surrounding areas
🏳️‍🌈 1 × LGBTQ+ owned business

You can nominate yourself or someone else – whether that’s a CIC doing great work in the local community, or an LGBTQ+ owned business that could benefit from some professional support.

Could you – or someone you know – benefit from having an accountant in your corner?

📅 Nominations close Monday 5th October

It takes just a few minutes to nominate and you don’t need to be an existing Ascentant client.

🎉 A BIG CONGRATULATIONS TO TOM! 🎉

We’re delighted to share some good news from our Derby team – Tom Finnegan has been promoted to Team Leader in our Legal Cashiering team!

Tom’s journey with Ascentant makes this one extra special. He started with us as an apprentice, and it’s been fantastic to see him grow in confidence, develop his skills and take on more responsibility along the way.

Now, he’s stepping into a Team Leader role – a brilliant achievement and a real reflection of the hard work and commitment he’s put in.

For us, this is exactly what development is all about. We want to give people the opportunity to learn, progress and build a career with us, and it’s great to see Tom taking that next step. 🙌

Congratulations, Tom! We’re looking forward to seeing you continue to develop and thrive in your new role. 👏

Here’s to the next chapter! 🚀

If you run an independent pub, restaurant or café, it’s worth knowing about the new Hospitality Grant Scheme.

The three-year scheme is designed to support projects that:

• help new hospitality businesses get off the ground
• bring vacant premises back into use
• create training and employment opportunities
• help existing hospitality venues adapt, diversify and grow

There’s also £3 million specifically earmarked for 'Pub is The Hub', supporting pubs in rural and deprived areas to diversify their services and become even more important community spaces.

Applications are opening from the end of September, with guidance already available.

If you’re thinking about applying, make sure you understand what the funding can be used for and what information you’ll need to provide before you start your application.
