Today we were delighted to take part in the Funding for Growth – Micro & Small Business Series at East Belfast Enterprise, supported by Enterprise NI, British Business Bank and the Department for the Economy.

A few key themes came through strongly in the room:

✅ Confidence comes from preparation – having the right information ready makes decisions faster and reduces stress.
✅ Most businesses have more options than they realise – the “right” funding depends on purpose, timing and the numbers behind it.
✅ Working capital is often the pressure point – the right facility can remove friction and create headroom for growth.
✅ Good advice saves time – presenting the story properly can make a real difference.

If your business is considering funding for growth in the months ahead — whether that’s working capital, asset finance, or longer-term investment — Johnston Financial Solutions can help you understand your options and prepare a lender-ready case.

I’ve been reading the latest Northern Ireland SME Access to Finance Report and a few points really stood out for me as a Commercial Finance Broker.

External finance is normal - 56% of NI SMEs are using it. Demand remains high - 42% expect they’ll need additional finance in the next 12 months. Most needs are modest with 75% of those needing funding expect £50k or less.

One interesting sector insight: cash flow pressure is often demand-led. Many businesses report that weaker sales pipelines or higher operating costs drive their need for funding - that matters because it changes how we present the story to a funder and which options make sense, whether working capital or capital investment.

Confidence is the wobble - only 53% feel confident they’ll secure the finance they need. Often it’s not “we can’t get finance”, it’s about packaging the business correctly, choosing the right route, and acting early.

If you’re planning funding in 2026, what’s your biggest question - realistic options, speed, or documentation? Comment below or message me for a short consultation.

Should You Buy Property Through a Limited Company?

More and more landlords are choosing to invest through a limited company, with 69% of those planning to buy in the next 12 months opting for this structure (Paragon Bank). But is it the right choice for your plans this year? 🤔

âś… Potential tax benefits
âś… Easier to scale a portfolio
âś… More mortgage options

Sounds good, right? But before jumping in, it’s important to weigh up the extra admin, costs, and tax implications. While a limited company suits some investors, 78% of landlords still own properties in their personal name - because in many cases, that’s the better option.

One size doesn’t fit all, and making the wrong decision can be costly. If you’re unsure about the best structure for your investments, get expert advice from a Tax Adviser or Accountant before making a move.

💬 When you’re ready to discuss funding options, message me or get in touch at Mark Johnston, Johnston Financial Solutions.
