It’s easy to criticise HM Revenue and Customs … but yesterday I had the opportunity to sit in the room and discuss what actually needs to change 👀

Great to attend the HMRC Stakeholder Conference and contribute to discussions around:

➡️ The UK tax gap & small businesses
➡️ Making Tax Digital
➡️ AI & technology
➡️ E-invoicing & faster payments
➡️ Making the tax system simpler

A real highlight was sitting down with JP Marks (Chief Executive at HMRC), alongside other tax professionals and content creators, for an open and honest conversation 🤝

I also got to share our family story — from my dad starting the practice as a side hustle 35+ years ago, to the work we now do educating people through social media 📱

We even discussed something I feel strongly about — getting more tax and financial education into schools 🎓

Grateful to have had a seat at the table and hopefully play a small part in making things better 🙏

Still taking it all in…

Speaking on stage at XeroCon 2026 was a real career highlight.

The best part wasn’t just talking about AI or technology—it was being able to share our family’s story.

Over 35 years ago, my dad founded our accountancy practice, with my mum helping to build it alongside him. Today, I’m proud to continue that legacy as a second generation accountant, and my wife is also part of the journey too (which wasn’t planned)!

We’ve embraced technology and AI, but one thing has never changed - people will always come first.

Building relationships, earning trust and helping our clients succeed is what it’s all about.

A huge thank you to the team for an incredible and inspiring Xerocon 2026 - an extraordinary showcase of stories, motivation and inspiration as well as being able to connect with the Xero community 💙

Moments like these remind me how far we’ve come—and how exciting the future is! 💙

Today at the I was reminded how different my life could have been.

The launch of focused on a simple but powerful message:

Talent is everywhere. Opportunity is not.

As discussions centred around entrepreneurship, financial education, mentoring and breaking down barriers, I found myself reflecting on my own family’s story.

Many years ago, my father started our accountancy practice as a side hustle alongside his day job.

No investors.
No social media.
No roadmap.

Just hard work, belief and the support of my mother.

That decision changed the future of our family.

It was inspiring to hear from , MP and Kate Hayward on the importance of creating opportunities and supporting aspiring entrepreneurs.

A recurring theme throughout the afternoon was that success often starts when someone is given a chance and encouraged to take the first step.

A huge thank you to , and everyone involved in such an important conversation.

My biggest takeaway?

Entrepreneurship shouldn’t be limited by someone’s background, postcode or circumstances.

What do you think is the biggest barrier preventing more people from starting a business today?

🚨 “We thought HMRC would never find out…”

That’s what a landlord recently told me after receiving a HMRC nudge letter regarding undeclared rental income.

We’re currently helping a husband & wife disclose multiple years of buy-to-let income through HMRC’s Let Property Campaign — a voluntary disclosure scheme for landlords wanting to get their tax affairs up to date.

The reality is HMRC now has access to more property data than ever before through:

✔️ Letting agents
✔️ Land Registry
✔️ Digital systems & AI

The worst thing you can do? Ignore it and hope it goes away.

The journey I usually see with clients:

1️⃣ Panic
2️⃣ Realisation
3️⃣ Information gathering
4️⃣ Relief once everything is resolved

🚨 Minimum Wage has changed for 2026 🚨

If you employ staff, this is NOT something you can ignore 👇

💷 £12.71 (Age 21+)
💷 £10.85 (18–20)
💷 £8.00 (16–17)
💷 £8.00 (Apprentice)

Sounds simple… but this is where businesses get caught out 👀

❌ Paying the wrong rate
❌ Not updating payroll on time
❌ Missing key rules around apprentices

👉 This can lead to fines from

✔ Get it right = stay compliant
✔ Get it wrong = costly mistakes

Last Thursday was one of those days that stays with you ✨

I had the privilege of being a judge for Company of the Year at Bishopshalt School 🏫

Nine teams.
Nine businesses.
And an incredible level of confidence, creativity and ambition 🚀

Each team pitched brilliantly 🎤
Handled Q&A with real composure 💬
But what stood out most… was their belief and energy 🔥

These young entrepreneurs are already thinking about:

✔️ Profit
✔️ Purpose
✔️ Impact

That’s powerful.

Huge well done to everyone involved 👏
The future is in very capable hands 🚀

Great judging panel 🙌

🚨 Attention Landlords

Have you received a letter from HMRC about undeclared rental income or heard about the Let Property Campaign?

Many landlords go through the same journey:

1️⃣ Panic – A letter from HMRC or hearing about investigations can feel worrying.

2️⃣ Education – Understanding what the Let Property Campaign is and how it works.

3️⃣ Collating information – Gathering rental income, expenses and property records.

4️⃣ Disclosure & settlement – Calculating any tax due, including interest and potential penalties, and submitting the disclosure to HMRC.

We have helped several landlords bring their tax affairs fully up to date with HMRC through this process.

📩 If you would like a free copy of my guide explaining HMRC’s Let Property Campaign, please email me and I will be delighted to send this across.

A fantastic couple of days at the 2026 at the NEC Birmingham.

I was invited by to speak about Making Tax Digital and share the journey of our family firm,

What started as a traditional high street accountancy practice in 1989 has evolved into a digital, cloud-based firm helping clients stay proactive with their finances.

Great conversations with accountants, fintech leaders and the wider profession throughout the day.

Events like this show just how much the profession is evolving.
