Meet the people behind Starfish: Olesia Avdoshyna, our Payroll Specialist.

For Olesia, it’s all about balance - in numbers, in life and even in ballet!

After moving from Ukraine to the UK, Olesia joined Team Starfish in 2022 as a bookkeeper and has since become our Payroll Specialist.

With balance as one of her core values, it’s perhaps no surprise that she found her way into accounting. Olesia loves getting to know the businesses we work with, understanding their accounting processes and identifying ways to help them become healthier and more profitable.

One of her favourite things about Starfish is the people. She loves working alongside a caring and supportive team of fellow working mums, as well as getting to know our smart, talented and creative clients.

And when she’s not balancing numbers (or practising ballet!), you’ll find Olesia curled up with a good book, fluffy socks and a cup of tea - her perfect antidote to the British weather!

We’re very lucky to have Olesia’s warmth, positivity and eye for detail as part of Team Starfish.

A great quote from Will Rogers for this week’s :

“Even if you’re on the right track, you’ll get run over if you just sit there.”

It’s a brilliant reminder that having the right plan is only the beginning.

Whether it’s in business or life, we need to keep moving, adapting and taking action. Even small steps forward can make a difference.

So, what’s one thing you could move forward today?

The first quarterly deadline on 7 August saw more than 436,000 sole traders and landlords submit their first digital update to HMRC.

That’s a significant milestone but Making Tax Digital doesn’t stop there.

There are still businesses that should have signed up for MTD for the 2026/27 tax year but haven’t yet done so. From September, HMRC will begin signing up eligible taxpayers who haven’t registered themselves.

And there are more quarterly deadlines ahead, with the next one on 7 November 2026.

Xero’s latest blog takes a useful look at what happens next, including:
- What to expect if HMRC signs you up
- Why it’s better to get ahead rather than wait
- The remaining quarterly deadlines
- How the first-year ‘soft landing’ on penalties works
- Why keeping your digital records up to date regularly can make life much easier

If you’re a sole trader or landlord affected by MTD, it’s well worth a read: https://blog.xero.com/uk/small-business-resources/making-tax-digital-income-tax-auto-enrolment-penalties-next-steps

And, as always, if you’re unsure about what you need to do next, speak to the Starfish team.

HMRC has started writing to landlords where information it has received from third-party sources doesn’t appear to match the information declared by the taxpayer.

HMRC receives data from sources including tenancy deposit schemes and other statutory reporting systems, and is increasingly using this information to identify potential discrepancies in property income.

If you receive one of these letters, don’t ignore it.

You’ll need to review your records and respond by the deadline given – whether you have additional rental income to declare or believe your tax affairs are already correct.

The letters may also ask landlords to consider:
- Whether all rental income has been declared
- Any Capital Gains Tax obligations following the sale of a rental property
- Whether Making Tax Digital for Income Tax applies to them

It’s important to deal with any discrepancies sooner rather than later. If HMRC subsequently opens a compliance check or investigation, a later disclosure could potentially result in higher penalties.

Received a letter from HMRC? Please let the Starfish team know as soon as possible. We can review your position and help you decide what action you need to take.

Meet the people behind Starfish: Jennifer, our Junior Accountant

Every great team has those people who quietly keep everything moving, solve problems and are always ready to help. Jennifer is one of those people at Starfish.

After a long career in the corporate world, Jennifer decided it was time for a change. She retrained in accounting to find a career that would give her more time with her family, completing her AAT qualifications before joining Team Starfish as a bookkeeper in 2018.

Fast forward to today and Jennifer is our go-to person for keeping clients’ accounts up to date and helping them get the most from Xero and Dext.

With her naturally detailed and diligent approach, Jennifer loves helping small business owners understand their numbers, learn something new and, most importantly, find solutions to those niggling problems that have been causing them headaches.

Outside of Starfish, Jennifer is kept busy spending time with her children, exercising and tackling her latest home renovation project.

We’re so lucky to have Jennifer’s knowledge, patience and problem-solving skills as part of Team Starfish!

If you’ve got money sitting in your business current account, it might be time to make it work harder for you!

A business savings account can help you:
- Earn interest on your surplus funds
- Keep money aside for future expenses or tax bills
- Strengthen your cash flow management

Even a small change can make a big difference over time.

Tip: Review your business banking setup and see if there’s a better home for your savings.

👉 Do you already have a business savings account, or is it something you’ve been meaning to look into?

Happy World Entrepreneurs’ Day!

Today is all about celebrating the people who have the courage to turn ideas into businesses, solve problems and create opportunities – including our brilliant clients at The Entrepreneurs Network

The Entrepreneurs Network is the think tank for Britain’s most ambitious entrepreneurs, with a network of more than 10,000 founders. They work to support entrepreneurship through research, campaigning, events and by making sure the voices of entrepreneurs are heard in policy and public debate.

We particularly love their belief that entrepreneurship is one of the most powerful engines of productivity and progress.

As accountants, we see every day the hard work, determination and resilience it takes to build and grow a business. Behind every set of accounts is a person with an idea, a vision and a whole lot of commitment!

We’re continuing our introductions to the wonderful people behind Starfish, and next up is Annie Upton, one of our talented Bookkeepers.

Annie has always had a head for numbers. Even as a child at school, she loved piecing information together, spotting where things didn’t quite add up and finding a solution.

That natural problem-solving ability is something our clients really value today. Annie has a real talent for identifying where things have gone awry and getting everything back on track, whether that’s bookkeeping records, a friend’s overgrown garden or even a house in need of a complete refurbishment!

She enjoys helping our friendly clients untangle financial information, bring order to the numbers and create clarity from complexity.

And after a busy day of fixing things? Annie likes nothing more than relaxing with a good book and a glass of red wine.

We’re lucky to have Annie’s eye for detail, problem-solving skills and can-do attitude as part of Team Starfish.
