Need a quick answer to a tax question? GOV.UK now has an AI chatbot to help.

The Government has launched GOV.UK Chat, an AI-powered tool designed to help people find official guidance more quickly by asking questions in plain English.

It can help with topics such as:
- Income Tax
- Stamp Duty
- State Pension and retirement planning

While it's a useful way to find information, it's important to understand its limitations.

GOV.UK Chat only uses published GOV.UK guidance. It doesn't access HMRC's detailed technical manuals and isn't designed for more complex tax matters. Like all AI tools, it can also make mistakes or provide incomplete answers.

Our advice? Use it as a starting point, not the final word.

Before making any important tax decisions:
✔️ Read the full guidance, not just the summary.
✔️ Make sure your question includes all the relevant information.
✔️ If you're unsure, speak to a qualified adviser.

AI can be a helpful tool, but when it comes to your finances, professional advice is still the safest option.

Making Tax Digital for Income Tax - don't forget your first quarterly deadline!

Making Tax Digital (MTD) for Income Tax is now live for many self-employed individuals and landlords with qualifying income over £50,000.

The first quarterly update for the 2026/27 tax year is due by 7 August 2026, so now is the time to make sure your records are complete and up to date.

This week we're celebrating Darren's first year with Team Starfish!

Over the past 12 months, Darren has become a valued member of the team, bringing a calm, methodical approach to every challenge. As a Client Manager and Management Accountant, he has a real talent for turning complexity into clarity, helping both our clients and colleagues stay organised, informed and confident in their numbers.

Outside of work, Darren enjoys cycling and taking on DIY furniture projects, proving that whether it's building a coffee table or solving a complex accounting challenge, he loves seeing a project through from start to finish.

Thank you for everything you've contributed over the past year, Darren. We're so pleased to have you as part of Team Starfish and look forward to many more years ahead!

Whilst in London last week, Emma also attended the Savvitas Champagne Afternoon Tea at the House of Lords.

What an amazing afternoon and a great opportunity for everyone to glam up in beautiful summer dresses, elegant hats, and fascinators.

It was a wonderful celebration of women, entrepreneurship, leadership, and community impact.

A trip to Number 10!

Emma was lucky enough recently to visit 10 Downing Street to take part in a round table discussion on the future implementation of e-invoicing.

With the Government committed to introducing e-invoicing by April 2029, the discussion focused on what needs to happen to make the rollout a success, the barriers businesses may face, and how they can be supported through the transition.

Emma was pleased to have the opportunity to share both the benefits and the challenges from the perspective of businesses and accountants. One of the key concerns raised was whether e-invoicing will help improve payment times or create new challenges for businesses.

There's still plenty to be discussed, but it's encouraging to see these conversations happening and for the voices of SMEs to be heard.

And, of course... no visit to Number 10 would be complete without meeting Larry the Cat!

Welcome to the team, Avinash!

We're delighted to welcome Avinash Khanna to Starfish Accounting as our new Client Manager.

After qualifying as a Chartered Accountant in 2020, Avinash has gained experience across independent practices, top-10 and medium-sized accountancy firms, and most recently as a Financial Controller for a leading cruise company.

So, why Starfish?

For Avinash, it was our purpose-led approach, B Corp values, and commitment to building long-term relationships with clients and our local community that stood out. Like us, he believes that great accountancy is about much more than numbers - it's about trust, collaboration and making a real difference to the businesses we support.

Outside of work, Avinash enjoys spending time with his family, travelling and playing football. And as the proud dad of a busy young daughter, he's no stranger to staying calm under pressure!
