What is an ISA?

An ISA, (Individual Savings Account) is one of the most popular and tax-efficient ways for UK residents to invest, and save for the future.

Each tax year, you can put in up to £20,000 per person.

And split this across different ISA types.

Investments in an ISA are free of income tax, and capital gains tax, for the duration of the investment.

When ISAs are especially useful:

- Flexibility to access the fund.
- If you are already contributing to a retirement fund.
- You would like to build an investment over time.

There will be changes to salary sacifice from April 2029.

From 2029, the amount that is exempt from National Insurance contributions (NICs) will be capped at £2,000 a year for employee pension contributions, made via salary sacrifice.

The total amount that can be saved tax efficiently into pensions is not changing, it remains limited by the annual allowance, currently up to £60,000. However if you earn less than £60,000 a year, tax relief on any personal contributions you make will be restricted to the level of your actual income (or £3,600 if greater).

Employees will still be able to contribute to their retirement funds, including via salary sacrifice, once the changes come into effect.

These contributions will still be exempt from income tax in the normal way.

However, any contributions via salary sacrifice above £2,000 will be subject to employer and employee NICs.
