Can we talk about emergency funds? I have seen a LOT of advice out there about how your emergency fund should be approximately enough to last you 3 or 6 months, which is apparently good advice - or is it?

Well… Here is where it can get a bit tricky.

Is 3 months enough, or is 6?

What does that include? Is it actually an achievable goal?

You can see where I am going, right?

This is OK as a really generic piece of advice, but it doesn’t take into consideration how an individual might live, or what they might need.

So, it’s a great starting point, and something is better than nothing, but I think we can do better… Which is what I’ll be talking about in my next post!

When I work with clients as their financial adviser, it’s more than just talking about money. It’s about getting to know you as a human being, and understanding what’s important to you.

It’s why you feeling comfortable to discuss what is on your mind in our meetings is just as important as regular financial ‘updates’...

Thank you to Richard for the wonderful answers to the questions on Vouchedfor

Did you know I love a bucket? I do, especially when it comes to money!

No, it’s not about having bucket loads of money; it's more about how you make best use of what you’ve got.

What people need their buckets for varies from person to person.

And, sometimes people have had so much cash for so long, it helps them feel secure. Even if they know it makes more sense to invest, the idea of seeing those savings drop dramatically is daunting, so we don't look at doing everything overnight.

An example could be: you have your emergency fund bucket, a bucket of funds you plan to spend in the next few years, between now and retirement, and a retirement bucket.

I know that feels like a lot of buckets… We break it down into small, manageable chunks to make sure things feel comfortable and natural every step of the way.

Are you someone who likes to have cash in the bank?

So many of us were brought up to save, but perhaps not so many of us were taught about investing. So it’s not surprising that some people feel a bit icky about the thought of investing their hard earned cash!

The FCA are currently trying to encourage people to invest instead of save.

But why?

Because inflation erodes the spending power of those savings over time; in other words, when the cost of your big shop triples but your savings have only gone up a bit, you're losing out.

Now, don't get me wrong, we don't think you should invest every penny; it’s more about being open to the other options out there…

I should have been meeting a potential client today.

We’ve had many connections in common and have followed each other on socials for a long time.

Earlier this week, I asked if they wanted to move the meeting, considering the 🌞🥵

I’d have been very happy to meet. I have a decent fan in my office, but it is important to me that they felt comfortable talking about their finances so I can get a good understanding and they get the right advice.

Other options to moving the meeting could have been:

🍦Turn up with an ice cream.

🎽 Wear what they feel comfortable in.

🪭 Put the fan on.

📞 A phone call instead of Zoom so they can potter around or sit in a dark room.

This is accessibility.

Accessibility is so commonly used that it potentially loses some of its meaning. It’s not even just for catering to specific disabilities; it’s just taking away barriers for people to get help.

Is there anything better than a bit of client feedback? I think not!

I am really proud of the fact that I am able to support such a diverse range of people. I could sit and tell you about how I can work with you to feel better about your financial goals, but it is so much nicer when someone else does it for me :)

If that sounds like you, and you want to see what other people say, then check out my Vouched For reviews. The link is in my bio.

How often do you check your pension statement?

Are you the person who checks religiously every week? Do you only check it once in a blue moon? Or are you the one who ignores it completely and checks it just before your pension review?

There are probably lots of different reasons why you check at the frequency that you do, but all of them are OK if it works for you. Your frequency might be completely different to your partner, parents or friends. Just as your attitude to risk can look very different, too.

But this is the thing… as long as you’re comfortable with your system and confident about your retirement, then do what feels right for you.

Divorce can bring a mix of emotions, as a split can bring a lot of uncertainty. Especially when it comes to money!

Taking the first steps can feel hard, but there is help out there. With the right financial planning, you can take control of your future.

The easiest way to look at your money is not to look at it as a whole. Breaking it down into smaller, more manageable chunks helps so much. And that’s where I can help.

As a financial adviser, I work with you to make informed decisions and build financial security, safety and certainty. I offer a confidential, judgement-free space to discuss your concerns and explore your options.

What is understandably a stressful time can be a little easier to navigate if you’ve got someone to support you.

If you’re in the middle of all this, then get in touch so you don’t have to face these decisions alone…

I was heading out the door to deliver a financial wellbeing workshop when my son asked where I was going.

'You can just tell them 2 + 2 is 4', he helpfully suggested.

To be fair, he was about 5 at the time. He's reeeeeally good at maths but understands that some people don't find it as easy.

For most of us, the problem isn't the simple maths, i.e. the ins and outs of the transactions. It's something else that trips us up.

I think the main problem is that finances aren't just about today.

They encompass our past, present and future.

You might have previous debts to pay off, you have the money in and money out to process today, but also to plan for a future, including short-term planning such as this year's summer holiday, a bigger purchase that takes years to save for, like a new kitchen or even retirement.

Then, to complicate it further, priorities can change!

You think you've got things all planned out, then something changes, whether it's car repairs or the kids grow out of their shoes. Even receiving adverts can influence how we think about money, and we see them ALL. THE. TIME.

This is how cash flow modelling can help. It takes all these different elements into consideration, but brings them into one easy to understand report. So it really does feel as simple as 2 + 2 = 4!
