What is a business health check, and why every SME should have one every year.

Most business owners only look closely at their numbers when something’s already gone wrong.

A business health check flips that around: a structured look at your accounts, tax position, cash flow, and overheads, done on a schedule rather than in a crisis. It’s not an audit, and it’s not about catching you out.

That might mean a tax allowance you’re not using, a cash flow pattern that’s about to bite, or simply confirmation that everything’s in good shape.

Done once a year, it turns “we should really look into that” into an answer.

VAT returns: the compliance task that trips up more SMEs than almost anything else.

VAT returns cause more sleepless nights than almost any other compliance task we see.

It’s rarely one big mistake. It’s small things: a missed invoice, the wrong VAT scheme for your type of business, or figures that don’t quite reconcile with your bank statements.

What’s the part of your VAT return that trips you up most? Tell us in the comments.

What does a free consultation with Kays Accountants look like?

A free consultation shouldn’t feel like a sales pitch. Here’s what ours involves.

We start by listening properly: what’s working, what isn’t, and what’s been keeping you up at night about the numbers.

Then we look at where you stand right now and flag anything that needs attention. You’ll walk away with a clear picture and no obligation.

You’ve worked all year… but where has the money actually gone?

You’ve been busy all year. Jobs getting done, money coming in, barely a quiet week. On the surface, everything looks like it’s moving in the right direction. But then you check the bank properly, and it doesn’t quite reflect the effort you’ve put in.

That’s where a lot of business owners get frustrated. Because working hard and earning money aren’t the same as actually keeping it. There’s usually a gap between the two, and it’s rarely caused by one big mistake. It tends to come from a series of small decisions, timing issues, and things that were never properly planned in the first place.

The tricky part is you don’t always notice it while you’re in the middle of running the business. It only really becomes obvious when you stop and take a step back.

Understanding your numbers properly changes that. Not just at the end of the year, but throughout it. Because the goal isn’t just to stay busy. It’s to make sure the effort is actually paying off in a way you can see and feel.

If that situation sounds familiar, it’s worth having a proper conversation about it.

Most business owners only look at their numbers once a year… that’s the problem
For a lot of business owners, the numbers only really get attention when they have to. That usually means year end, tax returns, or when a deadline is getting close. Everything gets reviewed, sorted, and submitted in one go.

The issue is that by that point, there’s nothing left to influence. You’re not making decisions anymore, you’re just dealing with what’s already happened.

That’s where a lot of opportunities are lost without people realising. Because your numbers aren’t just there to report on the past, they’re there to guide what you do next. Pricing, spending, what you take out of the business, how you plan ahead. Those decisions happen throughout the year, not just at the end of it.

When the numbers only come into focus once a year, everything becomes reactive. And over time, that approach creates unnecessary pressure.

There’s a much better way to stay in control of it.

Profit looks good on paper… so why does the bank feel tight?

This is one of those situations that catches people off guard. You look at your accounts and the profit looks healthy. On paper, everything suggests the business is doing well. But when you look at the bank balance, it tells a completely different story.

That disconnect is where a lot of stress starts to build. Because it feels like something isn’t adding up, even though technically it is.

The reality is profit and cash behave very differently. You can have strong numbers on paper while still feeling pressure day to day because of how money moves through the business. Payments don’t always come in when expected, tax builds up quietly in the background, and money can end up tied up in places you can’t immediately access.

It’s only when you properly understand that difference that things start to make sense. And once it makes sense, you can actually plan around it rather than constantly reacting to it.

You shouldn’t be left guessing where you stand financially.

Accounts should inform decisions, not just satisfy HMRC.

If they never feed into planning conversations, their value is wasted.

Numbers should work for you.

The real cost of a ‘cheap’ accountant

A low fee often means reactive advice and no forward planning.

The real cost appears in missed opportunities and higher tax bills.

Value isn’t about price. It’s about outcomes.

Tax efficiency isn’t about being aggressive, it’s about being organised

Most overpaid tax has nothing to do with pushing boundaries.

It comes from missed planning, poor timing and decisions made without foresight.
Organisation consistently outperforms aggression.

Smart planning, calmly done.

Why proactive accountants talk about the future, not just the past

Historic numbers explain what happened.
