Still doing your own tax return?

You absolutely can. But if it’s taking up your time, stressing you out, or you’re not sure you’re claiming everything you should be, it’s time to let go.

My process is simple- bank statements, a couple of questionnaires, and I take it from there.

I’ll make sure everything that can reasonably be claimed is considered, your return is filed properly, and you know exactly what you need to pay and when.

I’m not into making it more complicated than it needs to be.

I’ve got a limited number of sole trader slots left in September and October before my mid-November cut-off.

If you want one, drop me a message. 💫

Nobody warns you, when you set up a limited company, just how many different logins you're about to accumulate. Also a moment for me who has to remember all this for 64 clients 🤯

There's your Government Gateway ID for HMRC's online services, your company UTR for Corporation Tax, an authentication code for filing with Companies House, a PAYE reference if you run payroll, VAT registration details if you're VAT registered, a separate WebFiling login for Companies House online, and your confirmation statement, which needs filing every single year to confirm your company details are current.

Example: lose your Companies House authentication code and you can't be certain when a replacement will arrive. Sometimes it's quick, sometimes it takes weeks, and in the meantime you can't file anything that needs it. A missed confirmation statement deadline because a code got lost in an old email is a genuinely common way people end up with penalties.

No wonder people hire an accountant for this. Setting up a Ltd company? Let's get all your codes and logins sorted properly from day one.

MTD sounds like a nightmare before you've actually done it: new rules, new software, more admin than ever. That fear alone stops a lot of business owners from getting started. I know, I receive the panic insta messages and Whatsapp’s!

Here's what actually happened with my MTD clients this year: every single one was submitted well in time. No fuss. Not much else to say. And thats because we were organised.

It comes down to a few unglamorous habits: records kept up to date throughout the year rather than left until the deadline, questions answered as they came up instead of saved for one big end of year catch-up, and a clear process everyone followed the same way.

If you're dreading MTD, it genuinely doesn't have to be like that. Promise!

If you earned £30,000 or more in 2025/26 tax year (another reason to get your accounts filed sooner rather than later!!!), there's a change coming that's worth getting ahead of now rather than in 2027.

From April 2027, sole traders and landlords over that threshold have to file quarterly updates to HMRC through approved software, instead of the one annual Self Assessment return most people are used to.

It's a genuinely different way of working: 4 submissions a year instead of 1, which means your bookkeeping needs to be tidy all year round, not just tidied up once in January.

Clients who move to digital record keeping ahead of the deadline aren't learning new software at the same time as trying to hit their first quarterly deadline. If you're earning £30k or more, let's get you ready before it's compulsory.

The £90,000 VAT threshold catches out more business owners than you'd think (I just had a panicked person come to me- not a client may I add!!), and it's rarely because they weren't paying attention. It's because of how the threshold actually works.

It isn't based on your tax year. It's a rolling 12 months, recalculated constantly. That means you can tip over it in the middle of a random month without ever seeing it coming, and once you do, you've only got 30 days to register.
Example: if your rolling 12-month turnover crosses £90,000 on 15 September, you need to register by 15 October.

Miss the deadline and HMRC can charge penalties, plus you may end up owing VAT on sales you never charged it on.
