Selling on Vinted, doing a bit of freelance work on the side, renting out a driveway or a spare room. It doesn't feel like running a business, but if the numbers add up over the year, HMRC may still expect you to register and report it.

A few things worth checking:

🔸 Whether your side income for 2025/26 pushed you over the registration threshold
🔸 Whether you need to register for Self Assessment by 5 October 2026
🔸 Whether trading allowances apply, and whether you're using them correctly
🔸 Whether income from selling platforms needs declaring even if it feels informal

The rules haven't changed overnight, but HMRC's data sharing with online platforms means undeclared income is far easier to spot than it used to be.

On Friday 11th September, members of the ApC team will be lacing up their walking shoes to take part in the Cancer Research UK Shine Night Walk in Nottingham, completing the 10km route to help raise money for life-saving cancer research. The event takes place from Nottingham's Old Market Square and brings together hundreds of people to support Cancer Research UK's work.

Every step we take will help fund vital research and support the incredible work being carried out to improve cancer prevention, diagnosis and treatment.

If you started working for yourself, picked up a side income or began renting out a property during the 2025/26 tax year, you need to tell HMRC by 5 October 2026.

Miss this registration deadline and you could face a penalty, even if it turns out you owe no tax at all.

A few things worth checking now rather than later:

🔸 Have you registered for Self Assessment if this is your first year of new income
🔸 Do you have a Unique Taxpayer Reference, or do you need to apply for one
🔸 Are you keeping proper records of income and expenses from day one
🔸 Do you know which registration route applies to you, sole trader, partnership or landlord

Getting registered early takes the pressure off later in the year, when the January deadline starts creeping closer.
