When did you last review your protection?

New baby
New house
New mortgage
New job
Started a business
Partner stopped working
Income changed

Protection isn't necessarily something you arrange once and forget.

Life keeps changing.
A mortgage gets larger.
Children arrive.
Someone changes jobs.
Employer benefits change.
One partner stops working.
Income increases.
A business gets started.

The protection that fitted your life ten years ago may not reflect your circumstances today.

Consider reviewing protection at least annually and when major life events happen.

You don't necessarily need to change anything.

You first need to understand whether what you have still matches what you need.

This is general information and not personal financial advice. Protection cover, definitions, exclusions, eligibility and additional benefits vary between policies and providers. Individual circumstances should be considered before arranging or changing cover.

If you die without a Will, does everything automatically go to your husband or wife?
Not necessarily.
In England and Wales, if someone dies without a valid Will and leaves both a spouse or civil partner and children, the current statutory legacy is £322,000. Where the estate is larger than this, the surviving spouse or civil partner broadly receives the personal belongings, the first £322,000 and half of what remains. The other half of the remaining estate passes to the children.

Should your family know what is in your will?

One point Matthew Hutton made during our conversation really stood out.

“It’s important there are no surprises.”

A will is not just about deciding who gets what.

It is also about clarity, communication and redcing the chance of confusion or conflict later.

Where appropriate, talking openly with the people closest to you can help everyone understand your wishes before they ever need to act on them.

Financial planning gets very personal very quickly.

Who you want your money to help. What causes matter to you. How you want things handled if you're unable to make decisions yourself. Even what you do and don't want your money invested in.

I really like that this review captures that.

The plan belongs to the client. I see my job is to understand what matters to them and help make their finances reflect it.

What if you couldn't work tomorrow?

Would you know:
How long your employer would continue paying you?
What your existing policies actually cover?
When those policies finish?
Whether critical illness cover is included?
Whether your policy provides services you could use before making a claim?

These are questions most of us don't think about until something happens.

I sat down with protection specialist Jemma Read to have a relaxed conversation about life cover, critical illness and income protection and, importantly, what people should actually check.

The full conversation is now on YouTube. Watch it here:

Then do one thing. Find your existing policies.

A year ago I sat down with Jemma Read from Pride Protect to talk about something very close to me.

Protection.

Then life and work got busy and the conversation sat there unpublished.

Over the last five years in particular, I have watched more clients, friends and families deal with long term illness, critical illness and the death of somebody close to them.

I also know this personally.

Seventeen years ago I had a brain tumour. I was fortunate enough to have a critical illness policy in place and I saw first hand the difference financial protection can make.

So I have finally stopped making excuses. I have now released our full conversation.

Not because insurance is an exciting subject.

Because understanding what would happen financially if life suddenly changed is important.

Most people associate Powers of Attorney with old age.

That is probably the first misconception.

One point Matthew Hutton made during our conversation was simple:

Don't wait until you think you need one.

Nobody expects an accident, serious illness or loss of capacity.

An LPA is really about answering one question in advance:

If I couldn't make decisions for myself, who would I trust to make them for me?

We explore this, and plenty more, in my conversation with Matthew, author of *Your Last Gift*.

One of the most important parts of putting your affairs in order has nothing to do with money.
It is relationships.
In this short clip, Matthew Hutton shares why unresolved issues, unspoken words and difficult family dynamics can matter just as much as wills and paperwork.

What is the most important thing to sort out before you die?

A Will?
Your Finances?
Your Relationships
Funeral Arrangements?

Matthew Hutton's answer surprised me.

Relationships.

Because money, possessions and inheritance can turn small unresolved disagreements into very big ones.

Sometimes one of the most valuable things we can leave our family isn't financial at all.

It is clarity.

“Every meeting valuable and informative.”

That part stood out to me.

A financial planning meeting should never feel like time somebody has to endure before escaping back to normal life. It should answer real questions, deal with genuine worries and leave things making a bit more sense than they did beforehand.

“Likeable” is a welcome bonus too.🙂
