🚨 Still only speaking to your accountant once a year?
That might be hurting your business more than helping it.

Here’s the truth: your accountant shouldn’t just be someone you send stuff to at year-end. They should be one of your closest allies throughout the year — and here’s why:

💸 You’re probably missing out on tax savings
The best tax-saving strategies happen before the year ends. If you wait ‘til tax season to speak to your accountant, it’s too late to take advantage of a lot of them.

💡 Cash flow surprises? Easily avoided.
Regular check-ins with your accountant = better forecasting, smarter planning, and fewer “where-did-all-my-money-go” moments.

📄 Compliance isn’t optional
Tax laws change all the time. Chatting to your accountant regularly means you’ll stay on top of filing deadlines, new rules, and avoid penalties.

😩 No more year-end panic
Scrambling to find receipts and remember what happened 11 months ago? Let’s not. Spread the work (and the stress) out across the year.

🚫 Avoid letting small issues snowball
Whether it’s unpaid invoices or surprise expenses, catching things early with the help of your accountant can save you thousands in the long run.

👉 At the very least, check in quarterly. Ideally? More.

✨ Work with an accountant who actually wants to be part of your team — not just your tax-time task rabbit.

Think all your personal expenses can be claimed through your business?
Not quite…

HMRC is crystal clear — for an expense to be deductible, it must be wholly, exclusively, and necessarily for business purposes. No grey area, no mixing business with personal.

🍽️ Food and drink expenses? That’s where it gets extra tricky. You can’t just claim every coffee or lunch — the rules are nuanced and often misunderstood.

If you’re not sure what you can or can’t claim, don’t risk it. Getting it wrong could mean penalties, not perks.

💬 Speak to an accountant who can help you stay compliant and make the most of what you're entitled to.

Hiring your first employee?
Big milestone. Even bigger responsibilities. 💼

Before you jump in, here’s what you really need to know to stay compliant and start strong:

1️⃣ Register as an Employer
Before payday rolls around, you must register with HMRC. This allows you to run payroll and deduct Income Tax and National Insurance from your employee’s wages.

2️⃣ Sort Out Employment Contracts
Every employee needs a written contract. It should cover pay, hours, holidays, notice periods, and more — so everyone’s on the same page from day one.

3️⃣ Get Your Payroll in Place
You’ll need a PAYE system to pay salaries, handle tax and NICs, and report everything to HMRC on time. This is where payroll software (or an accountant 👋) becomes your best mate.

4️⃣ Prioritise Health & Safety
Even if your employee is working from your spare room, you’ve got legal responsibilities. Risk assessments, training, and a safe working environment are non-negotiables.

5️⃣ Understand Statutory Entitlements
Think sick pay, maternity/paternity leave, holiday, and pensions. These aren’t “nice to haves” — they’re your legal duty.

6️⃣ Stay on Top of Employment Law
Legislation changes often. Make sure you’re keeping up (or get support from someone who does) so you don’t fall foul of the rules.

✨ Hiring is exciting — but doing it right sets the tone for everything that follows. If you're about to take the leap and want to make sure it's done properly, drop us a message — we’ve got you covered.

Thinking of rebranding your business?
You can absolutely change your company name after incorporation — and it’s more common than you might think.

Maybe your services have evolved, your target audience has shifted, or you’re just tired of the name you picked on day one (we’ve all been there 😅).

Here’s how to do it 👇

✅ Submit form NM01 to Companies House
✅ Pay a small filing fee (online)
✅ The new name must follow the same naming rules (not too similar to existing companies, no restricted words, etc.)
✅ Update your branding, website, HMRC records, banks, and suppliers once it’s confirmed

It’s a simple step that can make a huge difference for your brand clarity and business growth.

✨ Pro tip: Before changing it, make sure your new name is available and aligns with your domain and socials too!

Got a name in mind but not sure what to do next? Drop us a message — we’ll help you get it sorted.

Listen up! Choosing the right accountant is important for your financial health.

Here are some accountant red flags to watch out for:

1️⃣ Lack of qualifications: Ensure your accountant is qualified and registered with a recognised professional body like ACCA or ICAEW.

2️⃣ Poor communication: If they're slow to respond or use jargon you don't understand, it could be a sign of future frustrations.

3️⃣ Limited experience: Look for an accountant with experience in your industry or with similar-sized businesses.

4️⃣ Pushing unethical practices: Any suggestion to bend the rules or cut corners should raise major concerns.

5️⃣ Hidden fees: Transparent pricing is key. Be wary of unexpected charges or unclear billing practices.

6️⃣ Lack of proactiveness: Your accountant should be proactive in offering advice and keeping you informed about tax changes and deadlines.

7️⃣ No referrals or reviews: Check their reputation. Genuine testimonials and referrals from other businesses are invaluable.

Choosing the right accountant is like finding a trusted business partner for your journey.

Do your due diligence and don't settle for anything less than the best fit for your needs.

Thinking of paying yourself from your limited company?

It’s not as simple as just transferring money to your personal account.

(And HMRC definitely won’t see it that way either 👀)

Here’s how directors legally and strategically withdraw money from their company:

💷 1. Salary
A small salary is often the starting point.
You’ll need to:
→ Register the company for PAYE
→ Stay under National Insurance thresholds where possible
→ Submit payroll each month (or use software to automate it!)

It’s tax-efficient, gives you NI credit, and keeps things official.

💸 2. Dividends
Got profits left after tax? You can take those as dividends.
✅ First £500 is tax-free
✅ Anything after is taxed depending on your personal income band

BUT — you must declare dividends properly:
→ Hold a board meeting
→ Issue a dividend voucher
→ Keep records for HMRC

(Yes, even if you’re the only director.)

📝 3. Director’s Loan
Need to borrow money from your company short-term?
This can be done through a director’s loan account.
But here’s the catch:
⚠️ Overdraw it too long or too much = tax charges + interest
⚠️ It must be repaid within 9 months of year-end to avoid trouble

Use it with caution and keep clean records!

🧾 4. Reimbursing Yourself for Business Expenses
Paid for business costs personally?
→ Keep those receipts
→ Log them correctly
→ Get reimbursed (tax-free) from the business

This is the only way to make sure your company claims the tax relief — and you get your money back legally.

💡 Reminder:
Mixing up business and personal spending = a one-way ticket to an HMRC headache.

📩 If you're not sure how to structure this or want to keep it all compliant and tax-savvy, DM us. We can help you build a pay strategy that actually makes sense for you and your biz.
