MORTGAGE RISES HIT MILLIONS

More than 5 million homeowners are expected to see their monthly mortgage repayments rise by the end of 2028, according to new Bank of England forecasts.

That is a million more than the Bank predicted in December, with the change linked to the economic impact of the Iran war and higher energy prices.

The Bank’s latest Financial Stability Report said the increase should be less severe than the payment shocks seen in recent years. A typical owner-occupier coming off a fixed-rate deal in the next two years is expected to pay around £45 more a month.

By comparison, those refinancing between late 2022 and the end of 2024 faced an average rise of £120 a month.

FUEL PRICES: UK diesel prices recorded their biggest monthly fall on record in June, according to the RAC, after a sharp drop in crude oil prices fed through to forecourts.

The average price of diesel fell by almost 17p a litre during the month, dropping from 183.75p at the start of June to 167.14p by the end. The 16.6p fall was the largest single-month reduction recorded by the RAC since 2000.

Petrol prices also fell, with the average price down by nearly 8p a litre, from 159.37p to 151.40p.

Simon Williams, the RAC’s head of policy, said June had been “a far better month for drivers.”

HMRC is consulting on plans to make direct debit the required payment method for VAT and PAYE, a move that could affect around 2.4m companies, sole traders and employers.

At present, only 330,000 of the 2.73m businesses registered for VAT or PAYE pay by direct debit, according to HMRC. Most still use bank transfer, card, standing order or, in some cases, cheque and cash.

HMRC says mandating direct debit would reduce administration, cut avoidable errors and help prevent late or misallocated payments.

Separately, HMRC plans to replace the paper-based VAT option for tax notifications and revocations with online tools by the end of 2026.

The consultation closes on 16 August 2026.

HEATWAVE: The Government and business groups have rejected calls for a legal limit on workplace temperatures, despite growing concern about worker safety during extreme heat.

The debate intensified after the Met Office issued only its second red warning for extreme heat, with temperatures forecast to reach at least 39°C. Climate campaigners and workers’ rights groups said more than 1,000 people had signed up for a “heat strike”, including lunchtime walkouts.

The UK has no legal limit on working temperatures. Current guidance refers only to minimum temperatures of 16°C or 13°C for physically demanding work.

AI FUELS SURGE IN SCAMS: Fraud in the UK has risen sharply, with criminals using artificial intelligence to target victims more convincingly and on a greater scale.

More than 4.1 million fraud cases involving stolen money were reported in 2025, according to new figures from UK Finance. That is the equivalent of almost eight cases every minute. The total was 11% higher than the previous year and 31% higher than in 2023, showing how quickly the problem is growing.

Romance scams remain a major concern. Fraudsters create fake profiles on dating sites and social media, then spend weeks or months building trust before asking for money.

In some cases, criminals have even married victims as part of the deception. Read more https://www.affordbond.co.uk/resources/blog/pw-news/ai-fuels-uk-fraud-surge/

ELECTRIC CARS: The UK Government is preparing to review how quickly car makers must shift towards electric vehicle sales.

Under the current Zero Emission Vehicle mandate, 80% of all new cars sold in the UK must be electric by 2030. That target rises gradually each year, from 28% in 2025 to 33% in 2026, before reaching 80% at the end of the decade.

However, car manufacturers and trade unions have urged ministers to ease the rules, warning that the current timetable could put pressure on costs, production and jobs.

INTEREST RATES & INFLATION

UK inflation fell to 2.8% in the year to April, down from 3.3% in March, although it remains above the Bank of England’s 2% target. The fall was larger than expected and was largely driven by lower household energy bills following a reduction in the Government’s energy price cap.

While inflation has fallen significantly from the 11.1% peak recorded in October 2022, prices are still rising at a slower rate. Core inflation, which excludes more volatile items such as food and energy, also eased to 2.5% in April from 3.1% the previous month.

However, the outlook remains uncertain. Rising global energy costs, linked to tensions in the Middle East, are expected to put renewed pressure on inflation over the coming months.

PROPERTY: UK house prices fell in May, recording their first monthly decline of the year, according to the latest figures from Nationwide Building Society.

The average property value dropped by 0.6% month-on-month after seasonal adjustments. This is the first fall since December 2025, when prices slipped by 0.3%.

Annual growth also slowed sharply. House prices were 1.7% higher than a year earlier in May, down from an annual growth of 3.0% in April.

Nationwide said the average UK house price now stands at £278,024.

Chancellor Rachel Reeves is set to announce a package of measures to help households manage rising costs linked to the economic impact of the Iran conflict.

A central feature of the package is free bus travel for children aged 15 and under in August. The initiative forms part of a wider programme branded the “Great British Summer Savings Scheme” which the Treasury says is intended to help families through the school holidays.

GROWTH: The UK economy grew unexpectedly in March, despite the early impact of the war in Iran.

Gross domestic product rose by 0.3%, beating forecasts of a small contraction. The Office for National Statistics said some consumers and businesses appeared to bring forward spending because they feared higher prices later in the year.

Retailers reported stronger fuel sales as motorists stocked up in response to sharp price rises, while some businesses told the ONS that activity had been pulled into March ahead of expected cost increases linked to the conflict.
