A good accountant should make your life feel lighter, not more stressful

I think people sometimes expect accountants to be intimidating

Very serious, very corporate, and possibly powered by spreadsheets and caffeine🤦‍♀️

Only partly true🤣

But the best client relationships aren’t built on fear or confusion, they’re built on trust, honesty and being able to have normal conversations without feeling judged.

Most people don’t need someone to make them feel worse about their finances, they need someone who helps them feel calmer, clearer and more in control.

That’s always been the part of the job I care about most!!

What I love about client meetings

I have many meetings with clients absolutely bursting with ideas, growth, expansion, new services, new markets. The full buffet of ambition.

And these conversations are my fuel. They remind me why I do what I do!

There’s something special about sitting with someone who’s thinking bigger than their current reality. You can see the spark and the excitement.

Ambition is contagious, it lifts the energy in the room. It pushes me to bring sharper thinking, better questions, and bolder advice.

When clients dream big, it challenges me to step up too, to be the adviser who helps turn those ideas into something real, structured, and sustainable.

Here’s to working with ambitious clients, it’s genuinely one of the best parts of the job😊

Your business might be profitable, your projects might not be.

One of the biggest mistakes I see is construction businesses tracking project costs but only including the obvious ones.

Labour isn't just wages, it's Employer's National Insurance, pension contributions and other overheads. Then there are vehicle costs, insurance, tools, plant hire and office overheads that are often never allocated to projects.

When the business is making an overall profit, these hidden costs can easily go unnoticed

But project-based accounting exposes them.

That means you can identify loss-making projects early, improve your pricing and stop quoting for work that loses you money.
